Director Reacts - BTS - Sea

One hour of interpretation and breakdown. So much in this tune!

Director Reacts - BTS - Sea

I can’t stop thinking about the chorus lines: “Wherever there’s hope, there’s a trial. Wherever there’s hope, there’s despair. We have to despair for all those trials.” What moves me about this: First, there’s hope, which motivates us, drives us, and lets us dream. Then comes the realization that we have to work hard for this hope and overcome many trials. So many, in fact, that we can barely recognize the hope amidst all the despair—eventually, everything blurs into one and the same. But what is the way out of this? At the beginning, it’s mentioned that when we absorb hope with greed, it’s like drinking saltwater. What if we shouldn’t chase hope and instead stop viewing challenges and despair as something we merely have to "endure"? “You despair for the trials.” If the challenges themselves become significant and valuable, showing us the important lessons in life, leading us to growth and insight, then pain and despair become necessary parts of progress and the challenges take on a deeper meaning. Hope is no longer the goal—it's the challenges themselves. By seeing them as valuable, we take away the fear of just having to "get through" them for things to eventually get better. But since understanding this logically is one thing, and genuinely embracing it, feeling happiness with it is something entirely different. Until then it remains painful and full of despair. That’s why the song also stays sad and full of pain for the moment. Thank you again for this great deep dive 💜🫰🏻

We are going to get through it. Whatever it is. That is one of the biggest failings of our attitude towards idols and celebrities. Their problems might not be the same, but they have them as well. Just sometimes different. That’s why them trying so hard to help us with ours is so even more inspiring. Also, most oceans/lakes eventually turn into deserts eventually. It’s all a cycle of life. Thank you Roscoe I needed that today. This is a song I put on when I am really struggling. So this meant a lot to me today. Also, I hope your friend is feeling better now. Send her a big hug for me. Borahae! 💜🫰🏻

If I'm not sadly mistaken.....2017....this coincides with TEAR and JIN's sad crying speech we all watched with you....about almost disbanding at that time! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Beautiful all encompassing comments to your equally thought provoking observations and personal feels. Again, if we all spent less time selfishly focusing on "what's in it for me" - there would be more smile and happiness plus less stress to go around! Well said🤞

HEYO, Roscoe! I've not been in the right state of mind since the Festa dinner. I've been struggling with some things and I've been avoiding watching your reaction to it. I'm sorry. I went ahead and watched this reaction because I've been listening to Sea alot since the Festa dinner. I feel despair but no hope. I pray to overcome my weaknesses and get outta this mental rut. Thanks for being with us. 💜

So my take on it has always been that they wanted to be successful but they really didnt expect the fame that goes along with it. They were so unprepared for the way they blew up worldwide and went from having a semi normal life to living in a goldfish bowl. Also the pressure must have been enormous on them as they were the first Korean artists to feel this effect to such an extent apart from Psy. While other Korean acts had performed overseas they wernt as wildly popular as the boys. They suddenly had sesangs coming out of the woodwork could hardly go anywhere without having people coming out of the woodwork. Bon Voyage shows this as they went from large countries to the much smaller Malta and New Zealand and altho they are well known in NZ the fans made it a point to let them enjoy their stay. Most of us Aussie fans also knew they were there but didnt broadcast the fact. I think for them to do Bon Voyage now they would have to look at places where the fans allow them to have some privacy.

I think your interpretation was spot on. I also think I may be able to shed light on your confusion about the release of this song. Comeback - when a Kpop artist releases new music. Festa - an annual 2 week celebration of BTS's debut. The Proof comeback happened at the same time as Festa this year. They are 2 separate events that overlapped. The title track of Proof is Yet to Come. Yet to Come indirectly references Sea. Anyone unfamiliar with Sea will miss it. I assume someone suggested you listen to Sea before YTC to make the experience more meaningful. It was great suggestion if that is what happened. In any event, I love Sea. I was hoping it would be included on Proof actually, and maybe in a way it is. Also when you do get back to ROB, notice that Aneesa uses Sea a lot when recounting times of hardship for the guys. Thanks for the deep dive into Sea (pun intended).

The way the song is arranged of how it builds up like the wave that forms until it crests at its peak, and we can hear crashing of sea foam as it plunged forward to shore then recedes back as calmly as it glided inland. Your interpretation is so similar to the images running in my mind. But to take this analogy and connect it to their journey of that mad cycle of debut, produce, promote, perform and close. Only to wake up the next day and start the insanity of comeback and move again, so unsure if success will continue. No time for growth: Cyle, spin, rinse, repeat... these 7 souls have had to "survive running" all these years. Wow! It's a miracle they're still holding it together. I love, love, this. Thank you for this. 💜🙏🏻🎵

I often think about how human they are, just like us, and can't imagine the expectations and pressure on their lives.

As usual, excellent thoughts.
