Questions for Justin Roiland (video game writing 101)?

Here’s our next guest! Obviously questions would need to be more specific to games and writing than to everything else he does :).

Thought I’d open this one up to all tiers because I imagine he’ll be one of the better known guests this show ever has.

"If you could choose one writer (dead or alive) to be for a whole year to absorb their life experiences, thoughts & dreams... Who would it be...?" (and why is it Mike Stoklasa from Red Letter Media... jokes)

Alvii.K

Didn't expect you to. Meant it more jokingly/expressing frustration since I'll probably never have the chance to see him again. Apologies though as I know it was inappropriate to have posted in the first place. As it stands my two actual questions seem to be some of the more popular ones posted here anyway. Enjoy the conversation! :)

Max, I’m not going to ask a guest this question on a writing podcast.

on a more personal note, i'd like to finally know why he was 3 hours late to his own signing at toronto fan expo a few years ago when celebrities are supposedly at hotels right around the corner? no apology or explanation. rumour was it was a bad hangover. they wouldn't make the annoucement over the PA so we had to keep checking in which killed the day since the venue is huge. We'd normally go 2 days to be able to see everything but were only able to do the one this year. waited in line for 2 hours when he finally showed up only to have the line cut off with only one other person in front of us, since he had to attend a Q&A (which was sold out so we couldn't do that either). he came back 5 minutes later to make an exception for the woman in front of us to get a pic because she was in full unity cosplay. worst fan expo experience as it it basically ruined our day and wasted our time and money

do you find it challenging to write for games since you don't have full control over the story and have to consider all the things different players might do?

Max Isenberg

What is the thing you didn't expect when writing for videogames?

What really surprised him when he switched over to writing for games?

Chris Kirchoff

Where do you draw your inspiration from to write for the games you’ve worked on? Is it things you as a player would like to see or play in a game, things that make you laugh, etc.?

Omg I’m so excited for High on life! What was the inspiration for the the butter passing robot in Rick and Morty? How did writing for a video game differ from his previous work in tv? Were the writing processes similar or different in interesting ways? And which does he prefer writing for?

I’d love to know what inspiration he has taken to come up with some solutions to his puzzles. I remember having to look up some things in Trover Saves the Universe. And the tapes in Rick and Morty VR.
