TIL: Hose clamps are weak in free air

... their buckle has to actually clamp something otherwise it breaks :|

Ooops

This is hilarious 😂 thank you for sharing

Gonzalo Andreani

They were advertised as stainless but don't feel like good steel, probably just galvanized? The "buckles" "legs" bent because they rely on being clamped onto something

Marco Reps

Damn, that's a lot cheaper than 2 hose clamps and hours of 3D printing time were

Marco Reps

TIMBER!

Uwe Zimmermann

So funny - that clamp, the confused look on your face - everything says fail about this idea - I have been here so many times! ;) biggest hose clamp I ever saw - wouldn't trust it for a moment. Get a proper aerial chimney fixing with the steel cables, something like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-Chimney-Lashing-Bracket-Kit-TV-Aerial-Satellite-mast-fixing-GALVANIZED/152839687228?hash=item2395f48c3c:g:OXYAAOSwZtJW9tya

I didn't know about those, but they use the same principle I've 'invented' for mine :)

Marco Reps

Google "chimney antenna mount" and you'll be looking at the right device.

Dermot Conner

Hahahahaha.... Sorry just had to. That looked kinda hilarious. The metal seems to be so brittle that it just snapped. Seems to be stainless steel perhaps? No idea what would be the right thing to use to be honest. Perhaps one of these straps that are used for securing loads to lorries.

Holger P Kleinert

Yep, they brakes when bended 90deg

That's a 3m hose clamp, so the hose would ~olny~ be 1m diameter :) Yes, I've seen those holders in the hardware store, but I didn't want to drill into the chimney for possibly short-lived LoRa experiments

Marco Reps

It refuses to work for anything that isn't round and doesn't want to work with bricks.

John McCormick

Oh a ratchet strap! Yes, what a great idea! But with those brackets I've printed, I thought 2 hose clamps should also work: They hold the mast precisely on the corner of the chimney so that only forces in a very specific 45° angle have to be fully taken by the hose clamps

Marco Reps

I hope you wear some safety gear which will prevent you from falling. And I think that those clamps just aren't strong enough to hold such levers. You can try clamps that are used for packing and moving of large items. Google tells that it is called "harbor freight strap" or something like that.

Volodymyr Babchuk

1) Hahaa :) 2) This hose clamp is surreal. What hose would be this big? And If you had one, Why use such a comparatively tiny clamp? Very confusing. 3) Just a suggestion, but maybe you could use clamps actually *made* to hold pipes on walls? Seems reasonable? :P
