Bonus #154 - Dungeons & Dragons Solves Racism (Extra Dose)

VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/pyxqIYbfBAI

Happy New Year everyone! The Earth has spun around the sun, or the disc has... done whatever it does, I don't know what flat earthers believe is the cause for seasonal changes and I kinda don't want to know... anyway the holidays are over and your ol' pal Buckley's back to his regular schedule! This week's bonus video is a tale as old as time... something gets popular, and then those bad old normies ruin it for the REAL fans! Enjoy!

Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro, and the current owners of "Dungeons & Dragons" are working on a few updates to the game, because it's more popular than ever and they want to sell more books. And one of those changes? To remove the word "Race" from the game, instead calling things like Orcs and Elves and Humans "Species". Buckley looks at the people who are mad about this, but also wonders if Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro could have handled this better...

Man that little KKK dude at the end was so subtle, I had to wind back and watch it again. Good job man!

Yup. Honestly I suspect much of the current backlash is people who were (more understandably) mad about that proposed mechanics change not wanting to back down once the released change was just a name change.

The gags at the beginning and near end was hilarious. I think the Kennel Club joke was my favorite.

Also, owlin is me lmao

Its fine drow are still races of elf if black is a race of human :p

I hate the people whinging about the change, and it pains me to agree with them for once… I think changing the word officially is pandering at its worst, and more of this language police thing. However, I also agree with Buckley - it doesn’t matter, you can keep calling it whatever you want, it’s not a big deal. Jesus, I’ve become a fence sitter…

Ash Archer

Maybe you felt my own pain while writing it, I literally started writing this big long explanation about things and then deleted it and went "this is boring as shit, no one is paying to listen to me explain this, they want to hear funny shit about it".

Adam Buckley

I don’t know why the “get to the fucking jokes Buckley” slide made me laugh so hard

Miguel

A word is not good or bad and can't hurt or please anybody. People may/can use words to that intend but when you are at the other end: you still have the choice to ignore/accept/debate/laugh/cry/yell/dance.... well whatever you want about it lol but some are stuck to the (there is only two choices bs). So if they could understand that they choose that themselves that would be great but they have some powerful denying reflex that prevent them to do so.... The sad state the world is you get to see more what the minority of people think (because for some reason they always have to whine all theirs "problems" to the world) and with the false conception that everything going public is what everyone thinks (so the exact opposite) on the media side.

That last joke was golden, especially with the graphic. Kudos! Oh, and happy new year, Buckley!

I think what annoys me when organizations declare innocent words as "problematic" is that they're implying the continued use of those words is wrong. There's something frustrating about corporations pretending to be moral vanguards, even when they have no authority on the matter.

Hasbro just wanted to win some progressive brownie points, not sure why, but as you said, they could have made the change for factual reasons. But that would have required the general public to accept logic as a reasonable explanation, and that’s asking too much. Also, your bit about breeds. That was good, but it got me thinking that that already exists in a way. It’s Miss America, Miss Universe, whatever the international pageants are.

Ryan McClain

Solid punchline. A bit ago they seemed to be going a different direction with this. They were removing all the bits in the books where it goes "race x is stronger, race y is shorter, race z is evil", which have some unsavory real world parallels, but kind of defeats the whole purpose of having different types of dudes. Maybe calling them species opens up the option of making them different again. In any case it's a controversial mess.

Buckley, PLEASE do another "Patreon goes Postal" I loved listening to your long rants and opinions about completely random viewer-submitted topics while I do the dishes and other mundane household chores
