Feathers and Flowers: concept dump

Some of the concept art I've done for Feathers and Flowers recently! owo

1) The concept design for two side characters in the story. The short boy is Gray Lowell, and the tall girl is Li Summers! Gray is prickly, defensive, and slow to warming up to people. He keeps everyone at a distance and prefers to be alone, which is the inspiration behind his last name, which apparently means "young wolf" But a lone wolf is still exactly that: Alone. And Gray will never admit that he feels alone in the world.

Li, on the other hand, is the exact opposite of Gray. She's upbeat, outgoing, friendly, and very, very, very talkative. She's easily excitable, a little hyperactive, and can be described as "always talking in exclamation marks", so she has the tendency to get kinda loud. She's a very sweet girl though; she can't hold a grudge and it's hard for anything to keep her down. She's Terra's younger half-sister; who I will actually get to a little later in this post! owo

2) Final base design for the side character Hazel Dolce, Kaela's future boss and pain in the ass. Hazel is a middle-aged witch attempting to navigate a very rapidly changing time, and her past hardships have made her rather bitter. She's biting, curt, and quick to annoy, and very rarely does she believe in "second chances". Quite frankly, Hazel doesn't like anyone, but if you earn her respect you're about as close to being "liked" by her as you can possibly be. But her respect is very hard to earn, and possibly not worth anyone's time since she's... well. Kinda an ass.

Hazel is the sole owner of the Flavor Fix Cafe, a business she started on her own. She might be an ass but she very well pulls her weight; with a bareboned crew of just 4 workers (three employees + herself) she does all the cooking while also juggling the responsibility of handling fussy customers, which unfortunately is rather common given how close her cafe is to the stadium. Being a witch doesn't make things easier, but if there's one thing Hazel excels at outside her cooking, it's kicking someone's ass out of her diner.

3) Concept design for Kaela's older brother, Dominique Malie! Kaela's family was rather split in their support when she expressed wanting to become a farmer, especially when she mentioned moving to a completely different country (her island is notoriously difficult for raising crops, so they get most of their produce via trade and shipping). Dom unfortunately was the least supportive of the decision, downright argumentative of it in fact, something that's really strained their relationship due to Dom's stubborn refusal to acknowledge it's merit. But there's more to his thoughts of his sister's dream-chasing than what he will admit out loud.

4) Base design for Sakura's brother-from-another-mother, Quincy Jones! For those who're curious: yes, he's trans. :) He's known Sakura since basically diapers, even before she was adopted by her dads, and has been family to her for all of it. Quite frankly, if Sakura's dads didn't adopt her, it's very likely Quincy's family would've. Although she already is basically adopted by them anyway, but that's besides the point. Quincy is very laid back, calm, easy to hang with; he has a "go-with-the-flow" attitude and rarely does anything burn his biscuits. But he's way more observant than anyone really realizes, and is rarely wrong when he predicts something, especially when it comes to reading someone's character. If Quincy likes you, you're likely good people.

5) Base design for Sakura's team captain, Terra Bright. Labels don't quite vibe with them, and while they usually use They/Them pronouns for the sake of simplicity they will also answer to just about anything you refer to them by. They are the elder sibling to Li, and is now her official legal guardian: long story. What does matter is Terra is very protective of their little sister, and if you know what's good for you, you'll treat her well.

6) Base design for Mio Imai! Mio is harsh, curt, and has very little patience for the bullshit, so don't even bother trying your luck. She's a witch, very obviously so, and she's sure to put people in their place if they have something to say, especially in her store the Hexes and Hedges shop. Despite her nearly inapproachable exterior, Mio has a good heart and does what she can to help others, even if it seems like she's angry when she does so.

7) Eva’s childhood friend and first love, Portia Winters! Portia is fierce, confident, and daring. The two of them met early in middle school through a summer camp for horseback riding lessons, and have been inseparable up until highschool. Portia was the first to admit having feelings for Eva (likely in an over-the-top way), and shortly after the two dated in a whirlwind romance. They were one of the hottest couples for the duration of highschool, but abruptly broke it off senior year due to an incident. Portia’s current whereabouts are unknown.

8 - 12 ) I'm pretty sure I uploaded these before, but they're environmental concepts for some of the locations in F&F! The first two are for Kaela's home, the second pair is for Sakura and Eva's dorm room, and the last is a roughout of the Flavor Fix Cafe, the location Kaela will have a job in. :)
