On Further Examination...

Every now and then we experience a "gotcha" when the game developers make an undocumented game change that affects the custom UI in unexpected ways. The most famous instance to date has been surprise changes to the way spell casts are reported, resulting in a super-annoying stutter for players using earlier versions of the Maintained Spell Monitor.

Recently multiple players have mentioned the Examine Item window disappearing more frequently than usual, as well as game crashes when using the DarqUI Locate feature to resurrect the window. I'm assuming this may involve internal changes to the adornment system, since that's the main difference between Examine Item and the other Examine types. It's producing a guaranteed crash to desktop on my systems when using Locate.

Locate uses /show_window Examine.ExamineItem, and that command is what's causing the crash, even when using the default UI. I don't know of another way to raise the window, so that item is now removed from the dropdown. If your Examine Item window appears to be missing, you can use this tried-and-true setting in Options:

Options > User Interface > Game Windows > Allow windows offscreen: UNCHECKED.

I think the intent was to allow you to move windows _partially_ off the screen. Think of all the times you scoot a window out of the way to see something else, and the side/bottom slide out of the boundaries. I've tried that setting and it feels very clunky and restrictive. On the other hand, windows that end up completely off the screen should automatically move themselves back into view. But that's a mod for another day :)

I have to ask, why would they even want to put in a feature that lets you have windows off the screen??? That's never a good thing and almost always causes problems!
