Well, make the second part Cannon then. There was Nothing that was against the story so far. It is just a bit unclear where in the Timeline it is. Maybe the day sfter the Talk with Giles?

Xander was more often than not the one in that role, since he was the normal guy who went through everything just short of hell itself to keep everyone else alive. Having to fight as much if not more than most of them while having to clean up after all of them. No matter how much of a mess they made.
