Hoshoryu to be named Yokozuna today

We should hear the official word later today that Hoshoryu will become the 74th Yokozuna and the 6th yokozuna from Mongolia. I will discuss details in the Wrap Up video coming this weekend.

Hoshoryu to be named Yokozuna today

Comments

I must admit, Hoshoryu’s Yokozuna ceremony looked pretty good. I’m skeptical of him, hopefully he won’t be a kinboshi machine, but it’s good to see a Yokozuna with working knees.

RetiredRadarMan

There is a video on youtube of Hoshoryu practising his dohyu-iri with Oho as his dewsweeper and Hiradoumi as his swordbearer.

IcemanEspoo

Yay!!!!!!!! I’ve been waiting for this since you first started posting videos of him when he made it to the top division!!! Like 4-5 yrs ago .

My brother-in-law & I had discussed the possible promotion over dinner on Monday evening - I speculated that the YDC could take into consideration that Hoshoryu fought the last match on the last day, forcing the 3-way playoff, and, in somewhat rapid succession, WON his 2 playoff bouts to win the Yusho; although not official in the score, he essentially had 14 match wins. Then I saw the YouTube pronouncement announcement by Chris Sumo on Tuesday morning - my comment there was simply "Amazing!"

Raymond Sosnowski

While I would not have promoted him regardless how much I enjoy his matches and cheer his wins. That being said Hoshoryu has been performing at a level that we have seen from other wrestlers before their rope run. Hoshoryus rope run was not overall the most dominating but not without precedence either. As there is not set requirement that if you fill you are promoted it leaves room for gut feeling promotions. Hoshoryu has been good, has had very few injuries and he is still young. This could be really good for the sport and on the other hand there have been previous yokozuna who did not shine after their promotion. I have every expectation that Hoshoryu will surpass Terunofujis 10 win achievement.

IcemanEspoo

My argument was: A Yokozuna should be dominant and able to achieve 14-1, 15-0 results more often than not. Then I had a look back at the records of other Yokozuna, like Harumafuji and Kakuryu, which I respect very much. (And no, that they were fighting during the area of another dominant Yokozuna can not be the only objection.) For the current time, I think Hoshoryu will do very well. He has still so much potential to realise. (And I'm also hoping for another promotion this year or early next year.)

Though I'm new to this sport, I'm an old guy, a lifelong martial artist and former competitor in wrestling and fencing. As such, the arguments that this is "undeserved" because of 12-3 vs 13-2, ignoring the pressure wins of the playoffs and the fact that sumo, like every other sport on the planet, has advanced in technique, performance and training over recent decades, grates hard. This guy is a fierce competitor. No one among the rikishi can match him at the moment. He is the obvious choice, and would have been so in any era, barring 'extraneoous' or personal reasons.

Dave

Quite frankly, a ridiculous comment.

Jonny

One question remains for me! Will the sumo establishment really lean into Hoshoryu as the first second generation foreign/mongolian Yokozuna!?

Exilhamburger

Golden boy rules!

Petra Zavadska

Hooray, Hoshoryu! Here’s to a long, successful Yokozuna term!

Drunken Bikkhu

Teru went 12-3 and 14-1, Horshoryu went 13-2 and 12-3 Teru also won at Sekiwake with a 12-3, won the next tourney at Ozeki at 12-3 and then lost to the Hakuho with a 14-1. The 2 tourneys before that he went 11-4 and 13-2 (Lost in Playoff). Horshoryu went 8-7 amd 9-4-2 in the two previous tourneys. Teru also went on to win the next 2 tourneys 13-2 and 15-0 after promotion. I am not rooting against Horsh, but they are not even close to the same promotions.

Derek R.

Time will tell. I believe the promotion is as much about the circumstances, as his performance. I like him and hope he continues to improve.

Derek R.

...that is amazing!!

Shawn

Proud of our boy Hoshoryu!! I know he will be a great yokuzuna!!

Nina

Me and my “American” aesthetic will enjoy every fist pump, head nod, and Gonoyama stare down the young Yokozuna gives us. When he had to have it he got it. If the JSA is willing to live with a few kinboshi doled out in the next year, who am i to argue. I think he will grow into a fine Yokozuna, if anything it’s an investment in the future.

Michael Figueroa

VERY HAPPY

mark ellis

Yay! I’m super happy for him! 👏🎉💪

Alyssa Woodman

I find it amazing how the moment changes a person. I, for one, have not been a particular fan of Hoshoryu. He has come across in competition as someone more self-centered (wanting respect) than focused on the greater good of sumo tradition (earning respect). This push to Yokozuna (and Chris's exceptional reporting on it, as always) has revealed more about the man than I realized. I see the ground work and the building to this moment, and I can see the physical transformation in a short time, the increase in mass, the softening of his face off the dohyo, that signifies that the aura of a yokozuna is finding him. I will be watching his first dohyō-iri with interest -- that will be the real telltale. I am rooting for him to be great, and I believe now he will be.

Chris Previc

this is a good day if you you're a fan of kinboshi. hopefully the council has stored away enough money in their rainy day fund to pay for them all. i predict quite a few in the next couple of basho. and no, i dont think he rightfully earned the promotion. 13-2 and outright win, maybe

Jim Bulger

Teru's retirement may have probably played a large role on Hoshoryu's Yokozuna promotion and it may seem rushed but he is most definitely the only deserving rikishi at the moment. He is also very popular especially with young fans. He is healthy and not injury-prone. I never saw him disrespect any opponent, I think he's just very locked in in every match. I believe he'll be a good Yokozuna.

Francis Gene Argate

Congratulations to Nephew. That final day of 3 wins back to back like he did shows Yokozuna level sumo

Roswell Richardson

Wow I am actually surprised. I honestly thought the JSA was not going to promote him but I can understand why it is necessary. In my opinion, he still has a lot to prove; however, he has been a very consistent rikishi. Definitely well deserved 👏

Jairo Ruiz

I kind of agree with the thought that this was premature. He was more focused in the last basho than I'd seen in some time, but the record over the past year does not seem to support the promotion. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Tiermac

Terunofuji's makuuchi win record % (wins vs. losses/absences) is 47%. Hoshoryu's? 61%. Teru's 2 basho preceding Yokozuna promotion? 14-1 and 12-3. Hoshoryu's? 14-1 and 12-3. A young and less injury-prone yokozuna who is gaining in skill and power... I don't know, to me it seems like the sumo-sky won't be falling. Let's take a deep breath. I'm with you in the sense I understand that urge to root against wrestlers because of certain things they do: after Takakeisho's infamous henka I had fun rooting against him. To each their own. Still, I find it's a lot more fun to root *for* wrestlers than root against them. Whether you like Hoshoryu or not, a good yokozuna is good for the sport of sumo, right? And if you take a glimpse at Hoshoryu's kindness off the dohyo, such as his relationship with the down's syndrome wrestler, I think you will realize that the fierce personality Hoshoryu cultivates in the ring doesn't sum him up as an individual. Not even close.

J. Kirsch

Ok Karen

Samuel Johnston

Well deserved Hoshoryu! Body willing he will be one for the ages.

John N

Rumor has it that he is tremendously popular with the fans. Look back at the disaster when Kisenosato was promoted. All to force a japanese Yokosuna. Hoshoryu is young and talented. He has a strong technique belt and will make a memorable Yokosuna. Mark my words. He is what Sumo needs in the modern age.

John N

Watching even as we speak (type?). Now official.

laurajdogmom

LFG!!!!

IvanTheOkay

Quite frankly, a ridiculous promotion. Fully undeserved and rushed. A Sumo association desperate for a Yokozuna, this elevation seems even more hurried than Kisenosato's. He has won 13 bouts ONCE in six years. He has won 2 basho out of 30 (2 years apart). He routinely disrespects the opponents. He will be loved by those with an American aesthetic... and loathed by those who want Sumo to remain a bastion of respect and sportsmanship. Sumo disappoints today, because they feel they NEED a Yokozuna. I will always cheer for Hoshoryu's opponents. Terunofuji's retirement was the deciding factor.

TC Candler

Woohoo!!!!

J. Kirsch

I am so PUMPED!!!!!!!
