January 2025 - Day 15 - 3-Way Playoff - Part 2

Ozeki Hoshoryu beat M14 Kinbozan in the first Playoff match. Now he faces off against M3 Oho to see if he can clinch the championship.

Enjoy!

Of course, this is true. What is your point exactly?

Jordan Greene

Actually, that is standard fare for any Ozeki! Start the basho fighting those in the upper maeghashira ranks, than fight the lower ranked san'jaku sekitori before fighting against the other Ozeki and any Yokozuna present. If a lower ranked maeghashira is still in the running (roughly after day 10) he fights those higher ups instead of an underperforming san'jaku one!

Exilhamburger

I adopted him as my new favorite when Tochinoshin and Kakaryu retired. I am so very proud of him.🐊

BULLgator4

Not with 3 losses hes not.

Colin Mathie

He also dropped 3 bouts to rank&filers.

Colin Mathie

👍he has earned it I believe

Charlie Balch

I think something that must be said IRT promotions, is that Hosh is uninjured and clearly at the top of his game right now. When is the last time we had a Yokozuna who could be counted on to be at every basho all fifteen days? the chances of the next YKZ whoever it may be being able to pull that off decrease all the time, so IMO if the YDC decide to promote Hosh it makes sense both from a skill and drive angle as well as a fitness and reliability angle. That's just my 2c

Wildhoggang

what a match! I know rikishi are supposed to be stoic most of the time but I love when they let it slip a bit and you can feel the outpour of emotion they have after a hard fought basho

Wildhoggang

I am so happy Hoshoryu won the tournament, he's been my favorite for a while now and I certainly hope he gets promoted y

Adrienne Ranney

Julia Child in the house! Lady in light blue left behind the gyoji. Looking good and enthusiastic too.

John N

I have no problem with the winner of this match advancing to the next rank .

Dave

Great tournament! Thanks Jason!!!!

Earl Brawley

boo

Goose Short

Maybe 12-3 isn't enough but that wasn't a regular 12-3! Make that man a yokozuna! Great match by both!

Brad Day

YES!!!!

jhockenberry02

Great tourney. Thanks for great coverage Jason. Congrats to The winner.

Corey McGrath

my sumo enjoyment magnified when I subscribed

Marvin Acklin

spine tingling excitement!

Marvin Acklin

Is 14-3 good enough? I would say no given who he lost to and who he defeated in those clutch situations, but I expect the association to say yes (and I'm not upset about it). A YKZ is an important figure for them, so I understand. That said, it's unfortunate to see the requirements slip, then slip even further... the slippery slope is real

D Lewis

The association Yokozuna tested Hoshoryu this basho giving him the top contenders the second week. He is really the only rikishi with enough skill to hold Yokozuna at the moment outside of Kotozakura. He barely lost to Kotozakura in Dec, as he caught his toe and slipped. Hoshoryu should get the nod. Thanks Jason!

Jordan Greene

Man, I don't know.... I am a Hoshoryu fan but those losses looked really bad. His dominance at the end looked like real Yokozuna Sumo and definitely put him at the head of the pack.

Stephen Nering

I think Hoshoryu is a Yokozuna level rikishi, but I don't think he would be promoted if circumstances were different. I don't hate that he will be, but as inflexible as the JSA often are in stupid matters, they can be very flexible when it suits their needs..

Derek R.

And he hugged his tsukebito, it's not often you see that! He's a good guy.

Barb

I think he deserves to be promoted, his aggression in the dohyo is just his way of focussing on winning. He is an incredible wrestler. If he does become yokozuna I think he will adopt the required behaviour.

Barb

Three in a row in about 25 minutes!

Merkwerdichliebe

You could tell he was feeling it. Just looking at the guy you could tell he was at the top of his game. I think it would be very difficult to not promote him after that performance.

Merkwerdichliebe

CONGRATULATIONS

mark ellis

Hoshoryu had fought in an unusual 6-way playoff in Juryo in the July 2020 tournament. So I suppose he is not a complete stranger to these more complex playoffs

Tim Crouch

What a great run by Hoshoryu! Kept his adrenaline up. Look what they did for Kisenosato but he is Japanese. Hoshoryu deserves it more! Thanks Jason, great coverage.

John N

I feel like the retirement of Terunofuji changes everything as far as the rope-run. There was some pressure to find a new yokozuna with it having been a pretty poorly kept secret that Teru was going to retire. But with him now gone, I would figure this has likely clenched it.

Tim Crouch

He has noting to prove. his 2nd title win and he finished 2nd last basho. Also he just fought 3 times in 15 minutes and won.. He’s Yokozuna material

King Rama

What a shame? Are you crazy? He went 12-3 and just beat 2 guys back to back with no rest.. you must be new to sumo…

King Rama

If it wasn’t for the possible Yokozuna promotion I’d have rooted for Oho.. After fighting and wining 3 in a row he deserves to be promoted to Yokozuna…

King Rama

Wow...loved that!! He is at the top of his game...especially taking on two hot lower rank rekishi. I was hoping Hoshoryu would take it the Cup!! Awesome videos this basho Jason...thank you!!

Shawn

The 10 min limit for Patreon is weird. Maybe it’s for new creators? I know a bunch of documentary YT channels that offer early access on Patreon. I’ve never subscribed to them so I don’t know but surely not? Bit of a shame because despite all the efforts to avoid spoilers, it was obvious Hoshoryu won after the first playoff match because there was only 1 more bonus video. No time for 3 matches in 10 mins. If they just allowed longer length videos it wouldn’t have been a thing. Either way I’m thankful for the coverage. Great tournament Jason, thanks for your dedication. And for all the Ura videos 😅

TheRealTeal

DAMN IT! Good match though.

Sean Williams

Wow great tournament. Thanks for the coverage Jason

Bruce67

Hoshoryu!!!!!!!!! Hands down my favorite. I don’t mind either way for the rope, it’s just been a blast seeing his progress.. feels so close to flipping the switch to that next level

Daryn

What a shame for Sumo! I hope they don't promote him after that Basho... but I fear they will feel the pressure to do it anyway.

TC Candler

I even shed a small tear for Hoshoryu 😢 great victory 🫡

Barajas Eli

What a great tournament. The man beat a triple playoff, I say give him the rope. And thank you for the coverage Jason

Afonso de Albuquerque

Hoss has so much juice, I love the aura and the passion. I know they are supposed to be stoic but the American in me can’t help but love his attitude.

Joshua Bacon

Spirited & Epic! But there can only be One! Definitely one for the record books! All pressure on the YDC!

Raymond Sosnowski

I know the OT matches don't count towards the record, but technically he's 14-3 this Basho. If it had been a sole win of the Basho at that 12-3 I'd say no - but damn that finish.. Either way it has been a great start to 2025!

JayyVee

There is desparation for a healthy Yokozuna! Before Terunofuji Hakuho and Kakuryu were basically missing in action for more than a year!

Exilhamburger

Absolute cinema! I hope he becomes a yokozuna

Johannes

So exiting. Thanks for the fantastic coverage!

yaakov rubinstein

Great tournament. Very exciting to kick off the year.

Joseph johnson

Congratulations to Hoshoryu! Love his personality in the ring a serious warrior and out of the ring a good dude that laughs alot and is a good buddy to the other wrestlers.

K. Bryant Mastin

Amazing. Wow. And I mean...he had to beat 3 men in a row one after the other to win this...I don't know if he will get yokozuna, but I will not be against it if he does.

Stoyan Zaimov

A great sumo day! I have not been a Hoshoryu fan. I watched last night the YT video of training and eating at his stable. His persona out of the ring completely changed my mind. Promote him!

Steve Cunningham

If it turned out to be a soft basho where the winner only got 12 wins or something, I think he might need 2 yusho still... but as someone already stated, that's technically 14 wins. Give the man his rope!!

Steve Mont

That's 14 wins ...

Dan Shaver

what a surprising basho this was, lots of great stuff... is there a chance Hoshoryu might still make Yokozuna now that his extra play-off wins technically makes him 14-3?

Michael Dyst

He deserves to be Yokozuna because he earned it! He’s a violent warrior on the clay and gentleman off.

Jeff Martinez

I don't think they should give it to him, it would reek of desperation of needing a Yokozuna. I want to see another 1st or 2nd becuase of that 8-7.

RyuKyuShogun

What a great Basho! I do not have a problem with Hoshoryu getting promoted. It is ok if the council waits until March too.

Kayak medic

Most incredible day of sumo I’ve seen in my short time following the sport! What a day!

Jonny

Give that ma his rope!!!

JoCol

Could not have been any more exciting. What a bout!

Barb

what a tournament ... thanks mr.jason from saudi arabia

MaRTiN MYSTERY

What a way to end the tournament. Great match.
