Dave - thanks for the Baseball video link, very fun, different sport, but does relate to this sumo match!

Hello

Atami looking better every basho. He will be a force to be reckoned with if he can stay healthy

I've heard several times recently that a foot/toe still in contact inside the dohyō negates irrecoverable position. Maybe like college football where they drag one toe to be inbound?

OMG! It does not get any closer than this! Great call by the Gyoji! But Hoshoryu should not rely on such tight calls - more solid Sumo needed.

I think that plane of the dohyo thing you were talking about Jason, only applies if they are airborn. But since his one foot was still contacting the ring it doesn't apply. I could be wrong though.

Wow. I don't want to put a spoiler here. The winner of this match made a very savvy move, and in the replay you can see he watched it as he consciously attempted it. I'm not one to resort to stick-and-ball sports references, but this is on a level matched in my experience only by Reggie Jackson breaking up a double play in a World Series game against the Dodgers by deflecting the ball thrown by the second baseman with a subtle movement of his hip. The look of outraged disbelief on first baseman Steve Garvey's face probably matched my own. That move cost the Dodgers a run, and arguably the series against the hated Yankees. The baseball version of the resulting mono-ii took about five tobbaco-chewing, histrionic, bench clearing minutes filled with vulgarity and threats. Interesting contrast of cultural differences. https://youtu.be/tvWKWvrVfrI?si=KBO8KOqRwE3Dq0zx
