Which ones do you like and which ones do you hate?
For example I think Dragons are the most iconic fantasy creature and are used a lot but I also love dragons so its kind of 50/50 lol

I don't like what I would call Flat Good Vs Evil. You know, where the bad guy does bad things because he's bad. That's silly; even real-world monsters and dictators did what they did because they either thought they were actually doing the "right" thing (if not for their fellow man/countrymen, then for themselves) or they're just acting selfishly. And I don't like Always Chaotic Evil races because they're just walking justifications for genocide.

But yeah, they should never be the hero or even the support if possible, or at the very least, have some reason they wouldn't want to interfere.

If the protagonist is predestined to complete a quest, overthrow the evil overlord, or bring balance to the world, there is a lack of suspense because the reader knows deep down that, whatever may come, the protagonist will succeed eventually. I have started and put down countless novels simply because this was a thing. I just cannot get invested in a premise like that. I am drawn more to stories where the protagonist is just another rogue, rebel, mage, or adventurer who takes action for moral, personal, or practical reasons and not because it was foreseen or because a wizard said it.
