Annoying Romance Cliches

If you enjoy romance in fiction, what are some annoying tropes or cliches that you hate the most?

What are some examples of good Romance in Anime?

Two that I like are Spice and Wolf and My Love Story but that's about it. Wish there was more Yuri anime.

I need research material for writing inspiration lol

I wholeheartedly agree.

I dislike stories where one or the other is expected to change significantly to fit the other. Especially if it's something like a tomboyish girl learning to become more feminine, or a guy being more bold. People in a relationship should bring out the best in eachother, and improve eachother in a natural and fitting way. Changing yourself to fit another is terrible. I don't mean like, working on flaws to present your best self, I mean mostly stuff that's basically "You don't fit your social role and have to get a guy!!!" I don't see it very often but it's terrible and I hate it. Also: The idea that it's not a _real_ romance unless there's a marriage. I think we focus too much on that overall. If people truly love eachother it shouldn't matter- they should only marry when and if they wish it, and we shouldn't see marriage as somehow making it _real_.

I hate liar revealed stories. Not only in romances, but in general.

Its not just you, the "Second Act Breakup" is the most annoying and overused cliche ever in any romance media, whether its movies, tv shows or anime that I can think of and it sucks. It is such a boring plot device, I want to avoid it as much as possible. Your right I often forget about looking for manga for research. Mostly because reading on a computer screen kinda sucks compared to a regular book. I'm also looking for regular FxM romance anime but I find that the conflict is always the same, one of them cheats on the other or the man has to do some massive, extreme gesture to prove he's worthy of her affection and in more realistic settings he needs to grow up and make more money which are both super boring cliches. Trying to find something a little different and its hard lol

This is probably just me, but I do get annoyed at the Second Act Breakup. It's always too overblown and dramatic and it could all be avoided if both people just took a deep breath and just talked to each other like normal people. Communication! It works! If you're looking for yuri for inspiration, you'll probably have better luck just looking up manga. I know it seems like every manga ever gets an anime adaption but you'll be surprised at how many good (or even just decent or interesting) manga never gets adapted. So you'll have a wider selection to choose from. You might also want to search for something called "Shoujo Ai" or "girl's love", which is basically the same thing as yuri but less extreme apparently. Again, a larger selection to choose from. I'm not interested in either, but you'll be surprised by how much I learned just from clicking around on anime/manga websites. That said, be very careful when looking for inspiration from anime and manga; like all fiction, it's exaggerated for effect, so sometimes they tend to go too far and it's kind of bad for immersion or suspension of disbelief.
