Episode 83 - Terrifying Ordeal Lifting Anchor!

This episode took some making!!! We decided to share this horrible experience with you in the hope you learn from our mistakes, and to show how crazy sailing life can be. Weather can change so quickly and things can go wrong so easily! Leading up to the day in question in this episode, we had put our stern anchor out to keep ourselves facing into the swell, so it wasn't uncomfortable in the anchorage when the wind was opposing the swell. Unfortunately totally unpredicted wind and waves built overnight and we woke to the deteriorating conditions we found ourselves in, looking back we would of done things differently, but on this day we chose to retrieve our stern anchor, Chris and Beau went out in the tender to do so and I stayed onboard with Bear to control Pickle incase we started to drag on our bow/primary anchor when the stern anchor was removed and we turned back into a more natural position on our front anchor. Anyway that is where the problems began, I hope you enjoy the episode, please feel free to leave us a comment, and I apologise for the swearing throughout 😬

Thank you for your lovely message, Sounds like you made a very sound decision whilst in Croatia, hopefully I'll be making more of those than any bad ones in the future! Thank god no one was hurt, I am so proud of my two little super stars ☺️

First of all, I am very glad, that none of You got injured and I am pretty sure everyone of us can learn a lot watching this video. And I can believe it was a tough decission to post this video. Everyone can make a wrong decission in a tough and unexpected situation. As You said and as You've written next time You wouldn't do it this way again. After watching the video it is easy to say, what You should have done instead, but I don't know if I (or others) wouldn't have tried the same. (Picking up the stern anchor with the tender). I was once in a quite similar situation in a small marina in Croatia with a 45feet monohull. Nice sunny day, some clouds coming up in the afternoon and all of the sudden they build up a big thunderstorm with huge waves an massive swell (I think this wind is called Bora in this area). All of the crew went to diner in town, but I had this feeling to better stay onboard. I made the decission to start the engine and leave the small marina all by myself leaving the crew ashore. I drove maybe just 2 or 3 miles out of the port to have enough space to maneuver directly against the waves and the bad weather just lasted for 2 hours and after 4 hours the sea looked like it never happend. I drove back to the marina to pick up the crew and saw I made the right decission. Three other sailing boats crashed on the marina walls and were massivly damaged. Sometimes You just have to make a decission and not everytime You are able to choose the right one. But as long as everyone stayed unharmed (which is the most important thing) who knows for what it was a good lesson and in a similar or worse situation everyone is more prepared. So, stay safe pickle family and keep going on. I love Your videos and You can be very very proud of Your brave kids.

Sorry, but I get frustrated. I saw your message and went to watch your video on Patreon (Ep. 83). It said that because of content, it was available only on You Tube. So I tried to access You Tube, and they said the video was age-restricted. I'm 75 ears old!! Am I too old to watch it?? So when I went to communicate with You Tube, they rejected the only two passwords I had listed for them. So now I can't speak with You Tube, even though I've been watching YT for 25 years and never had an access problem. At wit's end.

Your crew took this situation with strength & skill but totally understand the tears & hugs with Beau at the end of the project. Young scared Bear did awesome job helping video the whole terrifying incident while the rest of crew handle the problem with skill. Nicky you did well using again watch & subscribe rainbow, in keeping Chris's stage of undress away from YT's negative review. Assume you were awaken my this stormy situation which made it even more scary & worrisome. I know you & crew learn a lot to use later from this. Another great video.

Wow. You guys were really lucky. Crazy waves. That tender could have easily gone right under Pickle. I am so glad everyone was OK. Really quick thinking, getting off the tender when they did. Still had to judge the time to go for the ladder though. Bear will make a great news cameraman. Even though he was really scared, he just kept filming. Stay safe guys. Love you all.

Thanks Michael, it was definitely one of my worse unpleasant experiences we've had on a boat so far!

Sailing Pickle Family

I would have freaked! You guys were clearly terrified, but equally, so competent!
