Q+A #42 - What IS music?

A quick Q+A this week, hope you enjoy! I actually have a ton of thoughts on what music is, so my answer to the title question of this Q+A is just scratching the surface, but it's something that I find absolutely fascinating. The language analogy pops up frequently when I talk about music, and this time is no different.

Adam, how often if ever do you play a 5-string bass at a gig? Under what musical circumstances is a 5-string appropriate? Thanks.

2017-12-05 14:53:48 +0000 UTCHey Adam, When listening to songs in complex time signatures, how do you determine the time signature for a given bar, or even figure out where the bars are? In some cases its pretty obvious because someone would probably just put 4 bars of 9/4 on a page rather than alternating 3/4 - 6/4. But in some songs there are odd breakdowns or bridge sections that go all over the place. Should I take a strange line that is 3 - 3 - 3 - 4 - 4 and call it 3 bars of 3/4 and two bars of 4/4 or call it a bar of 9/4 and a bar of 8/4? Sometimes you can more easily tell where the downbeat is than others and this makes note taking difficult. Any thoughts?
