Vote on how Generative.fm Logins Will Work!

Hey folks, Generative.fm accounts are coming along! But I'm considering two different options for logging in to Generative.fm and I wanted to see which you prefer.

Option 1: Traditional Username/Password

This would work the same way most sites do. You'd register for an account with a username and a password, and then use those to log in. Optionally, you could also add your email address so you can recover your account in case you forget your password. No email address required!

Option 2: Passwordless Logins

Instead of registering for an account with a password, you'd just enter your email address and a login link would be sent to your inbox. Clicking the link (before it expires) would take you to back Generative.fm, but logged in. This is certainly less common but there are some sites that use it, like Medium.com. Email address required!

I was originally planning to take the second approach, but I wasn't sure how everyone would feel about having to use your email address or how you'd feel about the weird login process. Not that it matters too much, but option 1 is a little easier for me to implement!

In both cases, you'll stay logged in on your device for several months unless you choose to log out or clear the site's data.

For the record, in either case all login data will be stored securely with Amazon Cognito and I'm not going to send you unsolicited emails.

Happy holidays!

Yep, but only with traditional logins

Will it be possible to use an OpenID provider such as Facebook, Google, etc.?

Ah that's very true, I hadn't thought of that

Option 1 works well with password managers.
