I enjoy giving everyone free access to my projects, but hosting isn't free and it's not sustainable for me to pay for it forever. Most free sites use advertising, but I'm sensitive to that and don't want to spoil the projects. So I ran an experiment: I set up a method for users to chip in, and publicized the earnings and costs. I hoped enough people would be willing to fund the project. And you did.
Since you keep the lights on, Generative.fm is as much your project as it is mine. In fact, in the coming weeks I'll be adding a "credits" area on the site which lists the names of everyone in Tier 1 ($2) and up. I think other users ought to know who is actually paying to keep the site running. If you'd prefer not to have your name listed on the site, let me know!
Generative.fm was built to be cheap to host. But as funding increases, I'd like to add valuable features that weren't previously viable due to their costs, such as streaming, casting, Alexa/Google Home support, user accounts with synced/persisted data, and data collection (like total favorites/playtime so you can see which pieces are popular). I'll continue to use you as a resource for direction, suggestions, and feedback on new work.
