Part of what this episode is making fun of is the US court case known as Citizens United in which the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are allowed to give unlimited campaign donations because limiting them would infringe upon their first amendment right to freedom of speech. It came out two years before airing this so it was still hot-button. The ruling basically said that Google and I, a multitrillion dollar company and an average Jane, are equal under the constitution. Thus the ongoing joke in the American public that Citizens United gave companies personhood. They later used this same logic to grant private companies the equal right to freedom of religion (also in the first amendment) because a major craft store wanted to deny birth control to their female employees. Personifying Subway as an entity that can do other person things like enroll in school and fall in love is such a clever way to make fun of an utterly nonsense ruling. All while making another commentary on corporate influence “barging in” on our characters’ story, both in the narrative sense (Subway supplanting their business venture) and on a meta level (the writers forced to shove product placement into the story). Lampshading product integration is a risky play but when it’s done well, I prefer it to sloppily failing at “seamless” product integration.

But I'm pretty sure it's an ethnic thing, because he's a first generation Indian American (his parents immigrated from India). BTW, I think the Subway exec was so adamant about someone handing him his coat because he had an erection from listening to the tape. Also, looking good, Dean! Have you lost weight?
