Updates from behind the scenes

Hello everyone!

Who else excited is for the πŸ‘15th πŸ‘ Season πŸ‘ of πŸ‘ ASL? πŸ‘

We are gearing up for the upcoming season's launch, expected to be in mid-February. Initially, we're incorporating an additional editor and translator to expedite our turnaround time for each episode.

Before we begin, we wanted to share some updates and provide answers to questions several of our loyal fans have inquiring about.

We've heard your feedback that the VOD timer can prematurely spoil the results of a match.

Our team has thoroughly investigated alternative options and conducted extensive experimentation. However our research has shown that adding blank space at the end of a match seriously harms YouTube's algorithm. Uploading a second version of the VOD to a separate platform not only has the drawback of dividing the viewership analytics, it additionally results in increased editing + rendering time, larger file sizes, and much higher hosting costs.

To-date the data we've gathered leads us to the conclusion that not only does it have the drawback of dividing the viewership analytics, it wasn't used nearly enough to realistically outweigh these other factors. (As you might guess, these episodes often become substantially large files when published in HD... Esp with some of those Ted V.S. Ted's) πŸ˜‚

While we have your attention on this matter, we'd like to make a note that we are reaching out to the "YouTube UX/UI Design" team to suggest adding an "opt-in" feature which various channels / users could enable.

We believe this is a feature which has the potential to benefit content far beyond the StarCraft scene. So in addition to reaching out directly to them, we're also considering making some noise publicly on social media to help garner attention to this possible feature. If you wish to express your support, keep an eye on the comments section of this post as that's where future updates regarding this matter will be posted.

We also wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the efforts of our terrific production team:

1.  πŸ’₯Both nice__username & CobraVe7nom7 have been with us for several seasons and poured many, many hours of hard work into these past four seasons. Thanks guys, you know we love you... or at least like you both a whole lot :P

2.  πŸ’₯We'd also like to extend a massive shout-out to Andy Son who jumped into gear assisting us in the nick of time during Season 14 with the monumental amount of translation work it takes to bring our English fans the content we all enjoy so much.

3. πŸ’₯YOU, THE FANS!
Whether you support us here on Patreon, share our content, or just enjoy watching, we greatly appreciate your support because it's YOU, the fans who make this all possible. Thanks for joining us on this journey, We're excited for whats to come in 2023!
-- Much love from Tastosis & Team! ❀

Isnt it possible to just do a copy of a random ASL game or two at the end of the video?

Carl Christoffer Lysdahl

I think it is the correct decision to not alter the video itself, but instead the video player. We just have to spread the word to the viewers how it's done. I have personally used sc2links.com to hide game length for all but the very first seasons of ASL (so for pre-patreon era too). There are also add-ons for your browser that allow you to load the youtube video without the duration bar in the UI. It does the job.

Sihrtogg

I agree that hiding the video length is a feature that goes beyond SC. Some sport matches where there is potential extra time, such as soccer matches (some of them, at least), will benefit from this, too. If a team is leading 1-0 and there are only 15 minutes left in the video, then we can guess who is going to win that game.

BWFans

Hey, I'm an engineer who works at Google (though not YouTube). Let me know if there's anything I can do to help push the feature request along!

popcorncolonel

I'm super excited for season 15. I rediscovered SC1 in time for season 13 (thanks AtrosisCasts) and became a Patreon cos you did a great job for season 14. Keep up the amazing work

Louis Groves

Correct, you'd have to watch it live if you don't want it spoiled by the timer. I think it would be a cool option to have as a viewer

bfors

Doesn't that only work if you watch live? Progress bar comes back for the VOD. Or am I wrong?

Nathan

Cool. What trips me up sometimes is the top comment. I know a lot goes into this production already, but if AfreecaTV posts/pins a "spoiler free" comment for each video that would be nice.

Nathan

Excited as hell!

Joseph Weidinger

Why don't you guys use the youtube "premiere" feature for videos to hide the vod timer? Viewing it is like viewing a stream - no defined end time

bfors

Thx, We'll look into it! -- Cobra

Nick "Tasteless" Plott

Can confirm this extension works quite well, however those on mobile don't feasibly have the option to use this. --Cobra

Season 15 starts Feb 14. Best Valentine’s ever

Steady gentlemen

sc2casts.com has a premium feature to hide scores and spoilers for sc2 and brood war matches. maybe there is some partnership you could work on together?

StarkTemplar

Thanks for the tip. Looks like the same developer has a firefox extension by the same name

StarkTemplar

I absolutely cannot wait!!

Haoda Fan

Shout out to the editors and translators! Your work behind the scenes is so important!

SkillHonorHardWork

I use the Chrome extension "Anti Spoiler For Videos" which hides the video length and progress bar (and the comments). Works great! I keep it disabled, and then just enable it when I start watching one of the ASL videos.

James Markiewicz

Exciting! Can you elaborate on the Youtube "opt in" you're proposing?

Nathan

So excited for this season!!
