D&D Resources for Pirates and Sea Adventures

Ahoy! While we’re currently sailing through the Pirates’month here (+ Artisan Guild having Sea Monsters, #BestMonthEverForSeaAdventures!), we thought many of you would be interested in useful resources for D&D playing on this specific theme.

That’s why we took the time to dig into RPG channels and blogs and gather these informations here for you. We hope they’ll be useful for your future games and campaigns!

Dungeon Masters, take notes!

Naval Combat Rules

Acquiring a ship, how to run it, what crew is required to run a ship and what actions a ship can take in combat: a very informative video from Christian at RPG MD:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_IawLG-3Io

Another video from Mr.Tarrasque for a simple but deep ruleset when it comes to naval combat. Interesting according to a review from Robin C.  in the way that it allows everyone to take some kind of crew action that benefits the ship overall while still giving the players options to make individually impactful character actions too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJnuq3NpIyk

A more informative and analytical yet very useful video, “How To Be A Great GM” Channel posted one about nautical settings. Taking a look at campaigns, what to expect, what has been established, and sources that can be used to make an epic nautical setting:

Characters Classes for Pirates?

How will you create and play these pirates characters in your campaigns? You’ll need to be creative to find their perfect profile! Here are a few links that could inspire you.

We found one page on the D&D Wiki site that could particularly fit our Cannoneer, Mad Wren, or even other characters. Is your canonner employed by an army or private contractor, or he/she’s just a random person lugging around a cannon? Why is he/she willing to undertake such a dangerous position? Read more:

https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Cannoneer_(5e_Class)

Then DawnForgedCast Channel made a video about creating a Pirate Paladin. It could sound a bit antinominic, but it could actually be a great match with some of our Pirates of the White Sea characters:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ys69D9kYj0E

That’s it for now! We hope this post will help you to sail through sea adventures using our fantastic Pirates of the White Sea!

And what about you? What are your favorite resources for Sea Adventures? Would you share additional recommendations?

manages to download all the files! Now the next step is to get a #D printer ... or borrow one somewhere

Zoezem

@John Lacy: this can happen in some cases or at certain 'busy' times, but you can download in smaller bites, and 'Calculating size' won't take so long. Just navigate inside the file folders before choosing 'Download All'. This will mean more than one download to get everything, but you won't have to wait so long.

Looks like the files may have a problem, I'm just sitting at 'Calculating Size'

John Lacy

very cool, thx!

Great post. Adding to it, here is a link for "A Complete Guide to Nautical Campaigns" by Guy Scalanders ("How to be a Great GM" channel): https://www.greatgamemaster.com/dm/ And the original KS for the book in case you're interested in seeing the video and getting more details: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/guysclanders/a-complete-guide-to-nautical-campaigns

My group isn't meeting right now with the lockdowns but we were heading for the coast to escort the Kings emissary on a dangerous sea voyage. I already had AG's models printed and when I saw these pirates and the crab boats I knew I had to subscribe. I love the resources you linked. Way to go above and beyond. My DM and a few players are coming over Sunday for a paint session so I'll run these by him then. Btw the main antagonist behind all our troubles are Drow so I'm certain next months set will come in every bit as handy. I cant wait to get them.

Erik Waring

How did you know that tonight I’m running a naval DnD session? Thank you!
