I'm with you, I can't comprehend Ross & Phoebe at all. Chandler & Rachel neither. Joey & Monica on the other hand, I could see them together. My favourite is still and will forever be Joey & Phoebe.

They weren't going to show Ross and Rachel or Joey and Phoebe, people would be prepared for those. So they showed all the other ones. Except Chandler and Phoebe, they missed that one.

They wrote episodes for syndication so anyone could pick it up at any time, and it wouldn't really matter... and that's cool for weekly programming, but less so for streaming. Network sitcoms didn't really care about continuity nearly as much because of that. Boy Meets World randomly skipped 2 grades without mentioning it... it's irritating. Prepare my friend, this won't be the last time lol

We can ignore this episode, as it was written just for fun. There will be a lot more character background developed in the many seasons that follow.

But holy that’s a crazy amount of inconsistency’s omg 😩😩 kind of a pet peeve of mine when shows have plot holes so I hope the plot holes aren’t like a main thing in the show ahaha 🥲 also thank you for all the background info!! Rachel's friend Betsy says that "in one year from today" Rachel will be married, so this is supposed to take place EXACTLY one year before the pilot. But it is established in the pilot that Carol JUST moved out. Even if for some odd reason it took her a year to decide to leave, the pregnancy makes it impossible.

Rachel's friend Betsy says that "in one year from today" Rachel will be married, so this is supposed to take place EXACTLY one year before the pilot. But it is established in the pilot that Carol JUST moved out. Even if for some odd reason it took her a year to decide to leave, the pregnancy makes it impossible. Other inconsistencies/goofs: In 1x07 during the blackout, Phoebe lets slip that Monica had a crush on Joey when he was first moving in and Joey didn't know about it. However, in this episode, it is implied he knew. Joey implies that he thinks that Chandler is gay, but in 1x08 he and Ross say that neither of them thought Chandler was gay when they met him (though this is not necessarily a continuity error, as Joey could have been lying to Chandler when he told him he'd never thought he might be gay). It's unknown why Mindy was not shown in this episode since she was Rachel's best friend and maid of honour (though she may have been with Barry as they were having an affair behind Rachel's back). In 1x13, Monica acted as if she had never seen Joey naked. And when Monica introduced Rachel to Chandler in the pilot they acted as if they had never met before. However, as for Monica & Rachel, I just think they lost touch after high school, and Joey didn't know the others before moving in with Chandler. Other minor goofs is Rachel sending back drinks in the bar when in 1x05 she says she is too scared to even send back soup (this is also irony seeing as she gets orders wrong all the time at the coffeehouse) and Ross not wearing a wedding ring in any of the flashback scenes. Lastly, a small detail is Phoebe saying that "cute naked guy" has been starting to put on weight, thus becoming "ugly naked guy" (which is obviously super problematic). This episode was used as a testing ground for potential couples who had not previously been romantically/sexually linked. Ross and Phoebe came as a shock to me too but after seeing them in this episode I think they would be super sweet and interesting, along with Chandler and Monica. I know a lot of people love Chandler/Matthew for his humour but I actually love him most for his amazing sincere, serious moments like here with Monica ❤ Joey and Monica makes the least sense to me, which is funny because the writers originallly planned on them being a couple, but apparently when Jennifer was cast to play Rachel it was changed to Ross and Rachel. Another fun fact: Marissa Ribisi, who portrays Rachel's friend Betsy in the flashback episode (the redhead), is the twin sister of Giovanni Ribisi who plays Phoebe's brother Frank Jr. I'm probably not much older than you (32) but I know most of the people on the lists and it's insane to me that a lot of people don't 😂 From Ross's first list: Isabella Rossellini - Italian actress and model. Daughter of Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman & Italian film director Roberto Rossellini. Was married to Martin Scorsese & engaged to Gary Oldman. Elizabeth Hurley - actress most known for Austin Powers, Bedazzled & The Royals. When Chandler says that she is 'very forgiving', it is a reference to when her then boyfriend Hugh Grant was arrested for having a public indiscretion with a prostitute in 1995. To everyone's surprise she publicly forgave him and they remained a couple for another 5 years. Matthew Perry would later co-star with her in a movie called Serving Sara. Susan Sarandon - actress most known for movies like Thelma & Louise, Rocky Horror Picture Show, 1994's version of Little Women, Dead Man Walking (for which she won an Oscar) & Enchanted. Uma Thurman - actress most known for the Kill Bill movies and Pulp Fiction. Winona Ryder - actress most known for Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Girl Interrupted, 1994's version of Little Women & of course Stranger Things. Crazy thing is, she had a unique hairstyle that became iconic and copied by thousands of women at the time. Fast forward 20 years and the "Rachel" hairstyle became even more iconic. Chandler's list: Kim Basinger - actress most known for 1989's Batman, James Bond: Never Say Never Again (with Sean Connery), L.A. Confidential & I Dreamed of Africa. My 5 would be: Chris Hemsworth Johnny Depp Zac Efron Demi Lovato Taylor Swift Funny thing is, I'm straight 🤣 Goofs: When Ross brings his laminated list to show Rachel, he briefly holds it towards the camera which shows Uma Thurman, Isabella Rossellini, Elizabeth Hurley, Vanessa Williams and Dorothy Hamill. But Rachel reads: Uma Thurman, Winona Ryder, Elizabeth Hurley, Michelle Pfeiffer and Dorothy Hamill. When Joey moves Monica's hamper to show her the colour her floor tiles used to be she is shocked. It's hard to believe that Monica, being the clean freak she is, hasn't moved the hamper to clean the floor before. Joey supposedly has been building the unit for days with Chandler right there, and only once they get the thing upright do they actually see how wide it is. But they'd have noticed how wide it is when it was still on the floor. Btw, I've watched this so many times but I only recently noticed the random toilet seat in Joey and Chandler’s apartment in the first scene in E5 😂

The fact it’s called a Hall Pass now makes me think it was a thing in the world longer than when the show used it. But maybe? It was the first time I heard of the concept at least.

And then suddenly it became a topic of conversation or a fun party game to name who would be on your list of celebrities you could sleep with. It’s kind of like The Friend Zone. Maybe it was a thing before, but it didn’t get super big or talked about until Friends used it as a storyline.

Also yeah, Ross and Phoebe was clearly more of a spur of the moment thing, with Phoebe trying to comfort him and Ross being emotionally vulnerable, as they really, really don't work together, lol

He was upset and not thinking, but on her side it seemed like she had an interest in him already before this, the way she was very personal and got very close to him. And while Phoebe does have a thing for nerds, it's not something we have ever seen from them, so it was confusing for me too. Now Monica, I remember I shipped her with both Joey and Chandler during the flashback.
