The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers EXTENDED full reaction

this is a big chunk of a video!! my shoulder was kinda hurting by the end ahaha at the half way point I pause for a break so you have the chance to as well!! Its in watch along format so you need your own copy, theres a timer and audio cues for playing and pausing so its easier for you guys. I loved this one a lot, little bit more than the first so I had a fantastic time :) The last 10 minutes are the rough cut of the discussion so hope you enjoy!

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers EXTENDED full reaction

Comments

Yup. Faromir is a champ. I liked him in Two Towers, but I think he really impresses in Return of the King. I really like his arc. He not only fights on the side of Men, but it’s like he has his own personal fight with his father’s expectations and disappointment. Frodo definitely has a closer relationship with his gardener than most folks. But you’ll just have to wait to see if it develops into full romance. At any rate, at this stage it definitely feels like they’re bonded in a way that you only experience trauma and sorrow together. And in some sense that’s a lifelong connection regardless of how else they feel about one another.

Ooo I didn’t notice that about theoden!! You’re completely right tho he didn’t want the ring at all for himself it was just to impress his dad so technically he resisted it way better that everyone else! 😮 what a legend 😂 Also I’m glad I’m not the only one with the Frodo and Sam thing ahahahha I feel like their relationship is going to get more gay in the next movie I’m exited 😂

I had to split up watching the reaction because by the time I got to the pause it was already 1:30 a.m. lol I'm picking up the rest the next day. I think Eowyn has that classic Eponine storyline where she's in love with someone who loves someone else and who is loved by that person in return. The only difference I think the only difference is she has a different ending than Eponine, who could never get over her unrequited love. I think that's why I'm drawn to Eowyn in the books and movies; I'm a sucker for unrequited love as a trope and the characters that have to suffer through it. I feel like Faromir is more resistant to the Ring. He had his moment of weakness, but only because he wanted to please his father and not because he coveted the Ring itself. But he was more effective at resisting temptation and seeing that Frodo's quest to destroy it was the only way to end Sauron once and for all. In my eyes that makes Faromir a more noble character than even his brother. In fact, I liked him more from the onset than Boromir, again, because his story just seemed more tragic, being picked on by his father, who never really loved him like he did his firstborn. The Battle of Helm's deep is always a highpoint. I love the back-and-forth between the hope that the fortress will hold, to finding out that the numbers of Orcs is so much greater than they thought, to finding out the Elves have come to assist, to the wall blowing up, to the notion that they are defeated, to the final ride out in a blaze of glory to King's Theoden's exiled nephew Eomer and his army coming back with Gandalf to save the day. Good stuff. It's such a lesson in how to stage an epic battle with many peaks and valleys in the momentum. And you're not alone in thinking that there's some undertones to Sam and Frodo's relationship. It's still a joke between my ex and I that we say each other's name in the same tone and cadence as Frodo's, "Oh, Sam..." It's very forlorn and wistful, and I never quite know if that was the stage direction Peter Jackson gave to Elijah Wood or if he just made that choice to give those words so much longing.

Oooo I didn’t notice tbh!! That’s so cool

Small correction, The elven smiths and Celebrimbor while insanely good at their craft were taught by Sauron for the most part when it came to the making of the 16 rings, then celebrimbor alone for the last 3. This is how he weaved the his art of domination into the rings to be harnessed by the master ring later. Even the three rings crafted by Celebrimbor alone were still bound to the one ring due to Celebrimbors use of Annatars technique that he had learned from Sauron. So while the rings of power held by the elves were created without Sauron he still had some influence over them, this shows just how much of the ring making came from his knowledge, that even the ones created without his direct input were still somewhat bound to him.

Christian Hoff

I always just called the place where the rings were forged, Mount Doom. But calling it The Forge makes sense too.

they actually filmed while high but they decided to go for the more family friendly version of it and only be slightly high haha :) Like in the first movie When Bilbo and Gandalf are smoking just before the fireworks and bilbo says "gandlaf my old friend this will be a night to remember" while he is smoking you can see his eyes are glazed over and pupils dialated.. And it explains why the hobbits eat so much because they have munchies lol.. I think that over time the thought of it ACTUALLY being cannabis died down because of the Illegality of it BUT in Amsterdam and New Zealand I believe it is legal so they could do it (again could be wrong with the laws dont hate me haha) But I loved your reaction I cant wait for the next one :)

John Smith

wait like they actually got high when filming?? or it was directors notes to act high? ahahah thats wild

IcedQuokka

ooo i get you!! im excited to watch the last movie and hopefully all my questions will be answered ahaha :) now that you say that i was kinda thinking the battle scenes looked similar to GOT battle scenes ahaha bet yes 100% everyone took inspo from LOTR since it was the biggest of the genre set a high bar as well!

IcedQuokka

I feel like I should also Mention while it's fresh on my mind is that through each movie Aragorn speech pattern changes with every movie Viggo Mortensen done this on purpose he wanted people to be able not just to see his grown but hear it too :)

John Smith

Oh I almost forgot I think I saw a comment saying that the Pipeweed they were smoking wasnt cannabis (I could be wrong so dont hold me to it) but they ARE actually smoking Cannabis I quote a tweet from Mundo Tolkien "According to a video uploaded to Twitter by Mundo Tolkien, in the extra materials of the film you can see Boyd (Pippin), Monaghan (Merry), and Peter Jackson himself telling that, in each shot, the actors adopted a different state. Thus, in some, they appear "slightly stoned" and in others "very stoned", while in other shots they can be seen "slightly high" and "very high". This was a shout out to Tolkiens love of pipe tobacco :)

John Smith

Oooooooooh I get you.. the Rings was created by Sauron and Celebrimbor (this is probably the weakest part of the Lord of the Rings universe) as I believe it Sauron and Celebrimbor bounced off of eachother learning while creating the 16 rings before eventuallly creating The One Ring which Sauron himself made after learning from Celebrimbor (correct me if im wrong chat) You do learn more about the creation of the ring and other non mentionables I can not mention to you yet without seeing Return of the King, In the games Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War and I wouldnt go as far as saying "its a rip off of LOTR" Maybe some inspiration was taken but like you said at some point LOTR was released in 1954 I could possibly say that MOST high fantasy movies have taken inspiration from LOTR I mean look at Game of Thrones.. all the battles were inspiration from LOTR :) same with Skyrim the game Most of the locations in the game are almost exact replicas of places in Lord of the rings just with different names lol :D

John Smith

oooo when i say the forge i dont mean where they are creating the hybrid orcs and weapons i mean the forge where the ring was made and is the only place to be destroyed !! sorry i didnt really explain myself properly!! and yeah I can see those similarities hahaha thats more a common story trope than anything else tho, I could name tons of other books and movies that follow that so I dont really count it as a comparison in the "its a rip off of LOTR" type debate if you get me 😂

IcedQuokka

I think the forges you seen where they were forging weapons and stuff are beneath Isengard Tower :) Just thought I'd help youo out a little :) ALso When Aragorn kicks the helmet and screams It was a real scream and reaction as he actually broke his toe on set and continued with the scene anyway so the pain and aguish you see is actually real :) Also I thought I'd help out with the whole Harry potter, Lord of the rings thing for you So Luke Skywalker , Harry Potter and Frodo are all the young heroes with no power / parents ( sadface) Gandalf, Obi-Wan and Dumbledore are the mentor who sacrifices themselves to help the hero and come back with a different form and Saruman Darth Vader and Prof. Snape were all friends of our Dumbledore typed character killled or tried to kill our Mentor, some also all had a good side that came through to help our hero :) similaritys are not so much with the story but witht he characters themselves :)

John Smith

i think i knew isengard wasnt in mordor but i got confused with the forge and the eye tower 😂 thought they were the same thing but now im thinking its the volcano that is it the forge or something

IcedQuokka

oh i didnt even realise 😂

IcedQuokka

yeah low key mad respect for him

IcedQuokka

sorry i got so confused with all the new humans i thought i had it right but i think i forgot about him by the end LOL ahhh fell beasts soundss cool

IcedQuokka

OH LOL not me thinking there was more wizards ahahaha thats heaps cool tho! interesting that they are the same race as sauron thats giving me some thoughts for the final movie🤔

IcedQuokka

ooo hahaha i feel like they dont mention that at all, plus hes also the heir hes like a 100 different things at this point 😂

IcedQuokka

I'm finally able to start my watch of this and I can't wait to get to my favorite parts from this film, especially towards the end and the Battle of Helm's Deep. Isengard, the tower of Saruman, isn't in Mordor. I think historically Isengard is said to have been 125 miles from the borders of Mordor. So when they set up that shot showing the two towers of Isengard and Sauron's Eye you're supposed to think they're now connected despite being over 100 miles apart. Although, I guess, Isengard becomes like a fiefdom to Mordor so it's like it turns into an extension of Mordor on the map.

Also you said the actor playing King Theoden looked familiar, you may know him as the captain from Titanic.

Negative

Faramir is one of my favorite characters in Lord of the Rings. He has such a good intro when he looks down upon the fallen enemy and says "His sense of duty was no less than yours, I deem. You wonder what his name is... where he came from. And if he was really evil at heart. What lies or threats led him on this long march from home. If he would not rather have stayed there... in peace." Men are so easily corrupted by the ring and the fact that he was able to resist it and let it go is huge.

Negative

Two movies down, one to go! Gandalf left to find Eomer and his men. Eomer was the one that was banished by Wormtongue, and they were the ones that slaughtered the Orcs where Merry and Pippin escaped into Fangorn Forest, and they gave the two horses to Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli. They rode North and were very far away, so Gandalf went to get them, leaving Aragorn to help King Theoden. So the men that came to help at end there were all from Rohan. The creatures the Nazgul are riding are called Fell Beasts, some people think they are dragons, but dragons are much much much much much bigger.

Negative

Just hit your halfway point and wanted to mention some stuff while it's still fresh in my mind. First, great reaction so far and once again I'm glad you're watching these! The wizards. I didn't want to say too much after the first movie until Gandalf returned. There are 5, and only 5 wizards. One white, one gray, one brown, and two blue. They are Maiar, an angelic race of beings that were sent to guide the peoples of middle earth. They arrived 2,000 years ago but are much much older than that. Sauron and the Balrog are also Maiar, so technically Gandalf is of the same race. Nobody knows what happened to the two blue wizards. They went East and were never heard from again. Saruman was supposed to be the leader of the order but turned evil. Radagast the Brown cares for the animals of middle earth but tends to ignore the troubles of people. Gandalf was the only one that really stuck to his duty of guiding the peoples of middle earth. Gandalf did die but was sent back to complete his task, now as Gandalf the White, replacing Saruman. Also a reminder that Saruman wasn't always evil, but the seeds of his downfall were planted before he even arrived in middle earth, because Gandalf was the first choice to lead the order, but he turned the job down, so it went to Saruman instead. Saruman became jealous and greedy over time, and spent years looking for the One Ring himself before Sauron even returned.

Negative

Aragorn is a human, he is what is know as a Numenorian, who come from an island that was destroyed due to their kings arrogance and breaking the laws of the gods in search of immortality. They live much longer than "normal humans" as a gift from the gods for their service during war against evil and faith but are not immortal and with each passing generation their lives now grow shorter due to their ancestors fearing and working against death, so it comes to them quicker now (Also due to Sauron doing his bs to their faith and homeland). In some generations they will not be different from the average man or woman.
