I’ll try to keep this short which is hard bc I do think this is maybe the most perfect thing Minghao has ever done but here’s a few things! He was very vocal that anyone’s interpretation of it was valid and there wasn’t really a “right” answer so whatever you take away from it is 👍 Hai Cheng is the name of his hometown which translates to castle above the sea so I think that’s why there’s a lot of those kind of metaphors in the lyrics. And also there is a folktale surrounding it that it is a city the sea once existed in and receded from. And then he said just like how hai cheng has no ocean my heart doesn’t either but I long to go to the ocean so maybe it was inevitable I had to go far away to find it. He also mentioned how the song was about his mom a lot and I think the song had to kind of do with a longing and homesickness that comes from moving away from home at a young age to you know pursue his dreams. This also definitely made me cry a lot first time I watched so like u are not alone, I think a lot of people really connected with it. Well this was longer than I thought but I will include a little quote of him talking about it bc I think it helped me understand, “it’s like how across from the sea, there is a lone island, on that island is my lover, or the life that I want, or my family, or my hometown-it has everything I want on that island. But for me to go to that island, I have to cross this sea.” Anyways, ty for reacting! This was a very pleasant surprise I’m glad you liked it!!
