"Winter Madness" (Wintersun) Solo Lesson/Analysis
Added 2025-06-04 13:53:01 +0000 UTCBy far the hardest solo I've covered so far here at the Guitar School, Winter Madness has (rightfully) earned itself a reputation as one of the most challenging solos in the Metal guitar repertoire - so proceed with caution!
Unlike many solos where the difficulty revolves around 1 or 2 particular techniques, Winter Madness is the ultimate test of technical ability and will really push your alternate picking, sweeping, legato, economy picking and tapping.
It may seem scary but it's hella fun to play once it falls in place, so take it section-by-section and don't hesitate to ask if you need any tips on tackling it!
Good luck and don't forget to share your progress with everyone in the Discord server!

2025-06-10 13:20:32 +0000 UTCI remember being a little disappointed when Time I came out, because there was only one solo on the album and was looking forward to Time II, because Jari said in one interview back in the day that Time II would have more solos. After years of waiting here it is and even though it's only 6 songs, there is some beautiful shredding. But I hope there will be even more shredding on the next albums regardless number of songs.

2025-06-05 11:23:44 +0000 UTCBro, you fricken nailed it. I remember buying that album 20 years ago at a Tower Records when those were still around - back when I'd just look for new stuff I hadn't heard of by checking the record label on the back of a CD. If it was Century Media Black, Moonfog, Candlelight (usually), etc. Back then, those usually put out decent stuff. When I saw the Wintersun album cover, I thought it looked cool, so I took a chance and bought it (I think that edition was the Nuclear Blast one); and I'm glad I did, because it's a good one. Anyway, awesome job with this nostalgic piece. Do some Windir next!!! lol 😆 Actually, come to think of it, the At the Gates solo from "Cold" off Slaughter of the Soul and/or Trey Azagthoth's solo in "Where the Slime Live" would be siiick - I've always wanted to learn those. I doubt those are anywhere near as challenging as this one though. Just a thought!
