Update / Question...
Added 2024-08-27 10:17:25 +0000 UTCHi folks,
I've been thinking this for a while but I wanted to get your thoughts first...
Releasing the videos chapter-by-chapter is pretty much just ensuring the algorithm buries my channel. lol. I still don't really understand the ins-and-outs of how it all works but the algorithm looks at a number of things:
Initial views (views within the first 24 hours).
Watch time (how long is the video keeping people on YouTube)
There's probably other things but like I said; I don't bloody know!
Anyway - Definition of insanity is doing the same thing over-and-over again and expecting a different result. So I've known for a while that I should change how I release the videos. However, I guess there were two things preventing me from doing that...
1) I'm a creature of habit that, sometimes, stubbornly refuses to change lol
2) Some of the audience might prefer to watch the episodes rather than a 3.5 hour video
SO what I'm thinking is this...
Either - I just don't upload episodically anymore (sorry people that prefer that). And basically just upload a SuperCut once every several months. I, honestly, don't think I'd get the SuperCut out any faster because I am literally just one guy making 3 hour movies lol. I could, however, still upload episodes to Patreon. That could be a thing. I'm reluctant to do that though cos I really don't wanna create like a FOMO type situation with my Patreon page.
OR - I upload less often. So episodes are longer. No longer weekly but a video every 2-3(-4) weeks. Ideally about 30ish minutes long (give or take).
What are your thoughts? Which do you prefer? Or, alternatively, maybe you have a third suggestion? It's always nice to get an outside perspective.
Also - I spent a bit of time this morning trying to figure out how I'm actually going to do the Chronicle Vids. Cos it's been a while since I did that sort of video. It's been so long, in fact, that I've kinda forgotten how to make them! But I think I may have figured it out. I'm still in the 'very early concept stages' here... but I shall copy and paste the very small amount of 'script' that I have written thus far below...
Chronicle Vol. 4 Video 1:
Star Wars Opening Crawl Text
[For Some Reason; Buttress Returned...
Long ago, in a fictional universe that was great and then teetered on the edge of being shit before maybe being great again... Seven Titans born of Order were wandering about the great dark beyond. Searching for Worldsouls... which are essences of incredible power. Things that can be nurtured into becoming Titans themselves. Every time the Pantheon of Titans discovered a world with a soul, they would bring order to that planet and put life on it. Which, in turn, would help mould that Worldsoul into what they wanted it to be.
However...]
(In space)
S- "I'm Sargeras... doin' my Sargeras thing... a-hmmm-hmmm-hmmm-hmmm-hmmm..."
(flies past a planet being corrupted...)
S- "...a-hmmm-hmmm-hmmm... WHAT THE BLOODY HELL???!!!!"
(show some kinda lovecraftian hellscape on the planet surface)
Void Creature (whisper) "fuckin... suck a dick"
S- (some kind of noise that you'd make when cleaving a planet in half and killing all life on it)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Seat of the Pantheon)
S- "...Tainted by agents of the void. Had the corrupted Worldsoul been allowed to reach maturity... it would have risen as their champion. I did what needed to be done"
Am'- "You should be ashamed of yourself"
Eo- "We swore to protect all living things. Not explode them!"
Agg- "There must be another way, my mentor. We can defeat the Void Lords without destroying entire Worlds!"
S- "Shut your goddamned mouths. Hesitation and pacifism will achieve nothing. A dead universe is better than one consumed by the void!"
Titans- "GASP!"
Am'- "My feelings are hurt!"
(sargeras storms off)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And that's it. That's all I've got so far. Obviously that's not 30 minutes so there will be a lot more to that episode but I feel good about taking it in that direction I think.
Thanks, as always, for your support. Apologies for the very wordy post today. But yeah - Let me know in the comments what you think of the stuff. Both the 'changing how I upload' thing and also the script thing.
Cheers mates!

Considering the new vids are much more challenging to create, you could do a channel promo video in shorts instead. Just a mash of best vid gags, channel history and your overall approach to wow lore ( not necessarily in that order) Lol, you can name it " Come on down to Buttress!" 🤣 My reasoning is that the ppl who follow you regularly search for you and would get the update anyway since we have history with the channel. Could be worth a try.. Cheers!

2024-10-08 20:06:54 +0000 UTCI had seen that before. I guess its worth testing. However I have a feeling that what will happen is: The video I try that with will just get zero views. lol. The cynical part of me often wonders if videos with low initial view counts just get completely ignored by the vast bulk of YT users. But i probably will give it a test with the next video or something. See what happens.

2024-10-08 19:40:18 +0000 UTCI’d say take as long as you need per episode so that you can feel truly proud of. The current schedule while nice to see each week is super stressful i imagine. Either way keep up the amazing work and no matter what the release is for them I’ll always stay tuned and support ya.

2024-08-31 17:45:11 +0000 UTCI vote do whatever is best for the channel as well, whether the individual chapter method gets you better ad revenue or whatever. I generally watch the chapters as they come out as sort of a bunch of small trailers, then look forward to getting the whole cohesive story in the Supercuts.

2024-08-29 16:32:06 +0000 UTCTo be honest, I have no idea about YT and this algorithm witchcraft. I think you should do what is best for your channel and of course your private life. In the end, you should enjoy making these videos and we want to keep the Butress quality. For me, not much would change.

2024-08-29 10:25:20 +0000 UTCHey Buttress, just thinking out loud here. Would it be a good ideea if once you do a supercut, you restrict the access to all of the small chapters so that only the big videos remain accessible to the wide YT audience? I fear that not posting weekly in general might negatively impact the channel. The arc ideea mentioned above sounds very promising but I would implement it when publishing the super cuts. I personally find a 30 min - 60 min vid more manageable than a 3.5 hours one. The big one requires a certain level of commitment and that scares me sometimes to give it all at once 😅. Lastly, there is a strong possibility to gain a lot of traction with reddit / 9gag memes. Let,s face it: you add a special kind of humor to the stories that would be appreciated by a lot of so-called "degenerates" from these 2 social platforms.

2024-08-28 07:38:41 +0000 UTCYoutube algorithm is tricky - going more than a week between uploads CAN hurt a channel. I think in general you want videos to be at least 9 minutes long. The algorithm seems to prioritize channels with a regular release schedule, like same day every week. You could possibly add filler videos to have SOMETHING to release each week - maybe if you do a Twitch stream, a video of weekly highlights or something. It would be on-topic enough to not warrant creating a second channel (2 channels is a lot for someone to handle alone). If there are new cinematics in the game in a particular week, watch it and give your thoughts about what it means for the lore or something. Personally, I love the super cuts. I find the episodes to be too short, but doing just super cuts could really hurt the channel. Another commenter suggested doing slightly longer episodes of several chapters, and that seems like a better solution.

2024-08-27 11:59:52 +0000 UTCGood feedback; thanks. Separating into arcs rather than chapters is definitely a good idea. I'm aware of Thor / Pirate Software. He does seem like a cool guy. I probably should check out his content a bit more cos I've only ever really watched Shorts from his channel.

2024-08-27 11:51:54 +0000 UTCHey Buttress here are some observations on the channel, keep in mind i am in no way a content creator so take that part with a grain of salt. If you want to get more familiar with how the algorithm works, i would recommend watching some of pirate softwares channel, he has some good shorts on how to play the algorithm and in general better understand how youtube suggestion works. How quickly his channel has grown i would say is a testament to his knowledge on the subject. As for the videos themselves, i believe you are on the right path with longer videos. If i load your channel all i see are 20+ videos of the well of eternity which leads to a few issues from a user standpoint: - It is overwhelming, it straight out feels like a lot of content to cover, regardless of the length of the videos it is a lot of videos and its a lot of time. - Organizing the videos based on chapters does not give people wanting to watch the videos enough context of what the video is about. Most people visiting a channel will most likely do it because they want to know more about a specific subject, they will not necessarily want to start at the beginning of the story. Right now the organizational structure relying on chapters doesnt make that easy to identify. - Books have natural flows and mini arcs that can help you define where you should cut off a video. If you were using the first Harry Potter book as an example you could break it into 4 mini arcs which could be their own videos. "The wizarding world" covering up through the first night at Hogwarts, "Life at school" covering up to Christmas, "The Conspiracy" covering after Christmas break through the characters deciding to stop the theft of the stone and then "evil revealed" or something like that which is the whole going through the dog trap door and then the ending to the book. Now granted the WoW books are far more extensive and have a ton more lore than Harry Potter does, but it serves to illustrate a point. Generally people dont focus on reading a single chapter at a time unless they are time constrained. They will read a few chapters and stop, that could be a good indicator of where to stop the videos and call that an arc.

2024-08-27 11:47:33 +0000 UTCSecond channel is indeed an option worth considering!
Flying Buttress
2024-08-27 11:21:17 +0000 UTCHey Buttress! I would think longer videos is better between the two options you presented. Just a thought: Is this why some creators has 2 or more channels? Like if you had a "Flying Buttress Chapters" channel for the shorter videos and then used the main channel for supercuts.

2024-08-27 10:57:46 +0000 UTCThat is what I'm thinking. Also maybe a bit healthier for me too lol. I think back when I started; the recommendation was weekly, scheduled content but that changed and I just... didn't 😆
Flying Buttress
2024-08-27 10:42:17 +0000 UTCA longer video every 2 or 3 weeks sounds a lot healthier for the channel IMO.
