It's that time to discuss the cost of developing RoE and how I'm funding it. As such, this post will be going into some details of my current life situation.

To start, I'm going to reiterate that while I'm the one designing and writing RoE, I'm not the one doing the coding. I'm paying a developer for that.

Back in September of 2024 I made the decision to try to go full-time with writing; in part due to how much difficulty I was having finding work. I already knew and was aware that writers have a tough time making a living within the furry fandom, but the months have been a rough reminder of just how difficult it is to get the ball rolling and how few writers truly make it.

I am extremely fortunate to have family covering my current expenses. This has allowed me to funnel what little commission money I've made into paying for the creation of the RoE game bot.

Initially, RoE was going to be little more than a fun little growth bot. However, I began to realize its potential with time, and the scope of it has grown to match the expectation of that potential. 1.0 has laid the framework for developing RoE further into a fully-fledged game.

It was a bit of a eureka moment coming to realize that many successful writers in the fandom also tend to work on games like this one. As such, I have concluded that my foray into writing hinges on RoE being even moderately successful.

And the bar of that "success" is low. I'm already on record from a previous post stating that I need to hit $800 a month to break even on my expenses. The catch is that money doesn't have to come entirely from Patrons supporting the game.

The difficulty has been getting the ball rolling on my writing. I'll be promoting the game, of course, and if I can convert some of the new folks coming in to also get a consistent 1-2 commissions a month, that should be enough to get me to that $800 milestone.

I have not been officially quoted as yet, but based on the development process so far I am expecting each biome of the exploration expansion to cost $200-300 USD. ($1200-1800 total.)
