UNCUT/EARLY ACCESS: ATTACK ON TITAN S3 EP7

THIS IS SO HELPFUL THANK YOU!!

POINT 1: No, it wasn’t before Eren’s mom was eaten. It happened after that. Remember episode 1, when the Wall was breached for the first time in a hundred years and Eren’s dad was nowhere to be found? During the chaos, Hannes saved Eren and Mikasa and prioritized getting them onto the boat to evacuate into the next wall. While all of that was happening, Grisha (Eren's dad) was actually shown briefly returning to Shiganshina - trying to get back to his family after learning what had happened. By the time Grisha finally found Eren and Mikasa inside Wall Rose, he already knew Carla had been eaten (most likely from Hannes). That’s when he did what we later see revealed: something happened that night, off-screen at the time. As explained in earlier episodes, if a Pure Titan eats a normal human, nothing changes, they remain a Titan. But if a Pure Titan eats someone who possesses Titan powers, they revert back to human form and inherit those powers. That is exactly what happened to Eren (and Armin was right to question when and how exactly Eren became a titan esp after learning the truth of how a human came to have titan powers in the first place). Going back to when Eren first obtained his powers: it was after Eren and Mikasa were evacuated to Wall Rose, Grisha eventually found them and learned what had happened. That same night, Grisha injected Eren with the Titan serum, turning him into a Pure Titan. Grisha himself still possessed Titan powers, the one he had taken from Frieda Reiss, so when Eren ate him, Eren inherited those powers and reverted back to human form. Now I'd like to point out even though you did not specifically ask, that when Hannes saved Eren and Mikasa from the chaos in Shiganshina earlier, Eren did not have the key yet. It was only a couple of nights later inside Wall Rose that we see Eren wake up from a nightmare, with the key suddenly hanging around his neck (around episode 2 or 3). That was the subtle hint that something significant had already happened, even though we didn’t understand it at the time. Now it’s finally revealed why Eren had the key in the first place (that he had eaten his father at this point and they key was passed on to him by Grisha), at least to those who noticed the detail early on. POINT 2: If you’re wondering how Grisha was able to transform into a Titan to fight Frieda before stealing her power, it’s because Grisha already possessed Titan powers at that point. Taking Frieda’s power didn’t give him his first Titan - it gave him a second one. So after eating Frieda, Grisha was a human wielding two Titan powers simultaneously. This also means that Eren inherited two Titan powers the moment he ate his father. As for why Grisha did this and how he obtained his first Titan power, those details are explained later in the story, so I’ll hold off to avoid spoilers. POINT 3: Regarding your question about how Frieda was able to erase Historia’s memories: Frieda and the Reiss family are the true inheritors of the Founding Titan’s abilities, including the power to control Titans and erase memories - a power that now resides in Eren. However, as the series explains, certain bloodlines are immune to this power - specifically the Ackermans, the Oriental clan, and some other noble families. Importantly, this immunity does not apply to the royal bloodline itself. Historia, being a direct descendant of the royal family, is actually more susceptible to memory alteration, not less. You’re absolutely right in pointing out that the Ackermans and the Oriental clan were persecuted because they posed a unique threat to the king’s authority. No matter how much the government manipulated history or erased memories, those bloodlines could not be controlled. They retained the truth, which made them dangerous in the eyes of the king. This persecution didn’t begin with Frieda, it started much earlier, roughly 100 years ago, under King Karl Fritz, the same king who retreated behind the Walls. Which leads to the real question: why was this immunity so dangerous? Why did the king and the government as a whole feel the need to eliminate entire bloodlines simply because their memories couldn’t be altered? What truth were they trying so desperately to hide from the people? I hope this clears some of your questions though. :) Such a great story telling from Hajime Isayama. I know it can be confusing sometimes if you missed some details but it's so freaking good how things are revealed once you go back.
