I see it similarly as with Sanji being a perv/sexual predator, their culture for funny gags is often just rooted in middle school level humor. The perv thing and the haha funny crossdressing is pretty stereotypical dumb middleschool humor. I have to say though, I do not think Oda could have included Bon Clay or other crossdressers/queers if he did not make it into a funny gag. I do not think that would fly as well in 2002 japan, sad to say. Personally I hate that One Piece sacrifices characters for funny gags that are not really funny, but I also cant blame them due to its demographic and medium.

2025-03-25 22:16:03 +0000 UTCYeah Oda's writing as an ally of the LGBTQ+ community has always felt like it came from a good but kind of ignorant place π . Like hes a little confused but he's trying π« . As some have stated he does introduce characters later on who are much better written. And I've always appreciated that his queer characters at least arent stereotyped as plain bad guys with nefarious intentions. They're always characters who tend to ally with Luffy and the Strawhats (like Bon Clay and etc. π₯Ή)

It really expands the world building of One Piece in a creative way in where normally, for this show, we'd have to travel island to island by ship. But due to the power of a DF, we get to see multiple islands through the eyes of our separated crew members at the same time :)

2025-03-25 02:24:00 +0000 UTCYeah Sanji's situation sadly perpetuates some negative/harmful stereotypes about certain queer communities which is a real shame. Not one of Oda's best moments imo, but I don't think it's reflective of Oda's irl views. If I'm not mistaken he's got quite a few queer friends and colleagues, I think he's even mentioned Franky's VA inviting him to a drag queen performance once too.

2025-03-24 23:55:20 +0000 UTCTbf even if the crossdress/trans representation in one piece is kind of iffy at times, it is pretty damn progressive at heart, both for its time and culturally. It is made into a gag, 100%, but apart from that its a pretty positive representation. All the characters that fit into that category are genuinely really chill.
