Kokoro married a human, she had a son who was half mermaid, he married a human woman and they had Chimney, which is why Chimney physically looks like a human but is an amazing swimmer (it's how Luffy was saved from drowning when he got in the rowboat at Enies Lobby). It's safe to assume that Kokoro and Tom's relationship was purely platonic

The relationship between Hachi, Camie, and Pappag (the starfish) is one of those stories. There's a compilation playlist of these short stories on Youtube if you're curious, but you'd have to be extra wary of coming across potential spoilers.
