I will not harm you". A very unorthodox method of winning someone's trust, but One Piece is already pretty full of weirdos anyway.

An interesting fact is that the word they use in Japanese, "nakama" tends to mean more than is encompassed by the english word "friend". it can mean things like companion, close ally, or even just a colleague - like how Arlong would call Nami his "nakama" but in the sense she was just technically a part of his crew, but to Luffy, "nakama" is so much deeper than that.
