IFA 2025: Philips Hue Announces Bridge Pro, Matter Over Thread, More - Thurrott.com
Philips Hue lights get bigger, brighter, and cheaper with a major product refresh | The Verge

Let's start with Philips, which overhauled its smart home lineup, led by the $99 Hue Bridge Pro that is Matter compliant, so compatible with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings, and can connect 150 lights and 50 accessories. It can also connect over WiFi instead of Ethernet, if you want, and can also use Hue-compatible lights as motion sensors. Also, A19 smart lights use 40% less power, and all new Hue bulbs are Matter-over-Thread compliant, so you don't need the Hue hub. Philips also has a smart doorbell now called Hue Secure with or without a camera, and its Secure cameras are now available with 2K video. And there are lower prices with Philips Essentials bulbs for $25 compared to the standard $60, they just don't dim as low and have a narrower range of white light. Finally, you can now control Hue lights if you have a Sonos speaker, using Sonos Voice Control.

I've just seen Roborock's first robot mowers in action, and other lawnbot brands should be worried | TechRadar

The high-end Z1 has all-wheel drive and can handle slopes up to 80% and clear steps up to 6 cm tall. Coming to Europe in a few months and the US in 2026, no price yet.

And it comes with a 5.5-watt detachable solar panel that can charge fully in one hour of direct sunlight. The S4 costs $300, coming later this year.

SwitchBot launches three AI-powered smart home products — including a pair of robots | The Verge

SwitchBot launched a new smart home hub, an E Ink Art Frame, and two animated pets named Niko and Noa. The hub uses cloud models to interpret what's happening in your home and report it to you or let you ask general questions like "Where did I leave my phone?" The E Ink Spectra 6 display lets you upload art or generate it from a prompt. It's available in three sizes and fits into standard Ikea frames. Noa and Niko are bots that look like fuzzy penguins with glowy blue eyes. They have wheels so they can move around, recognize family members, respond to gestures and emotions, express feelings, and learn household routines. No price or release date on any of this.

Apple Plans AI Search Engine for Siri to Rival OpenAI; Google-Siri Talks Advance - Bloomberg
Apple’s rumored AI search tool for Siri could rely on Google | The Verge
Apple’s Siri upgrade could reportedly be powered by Google Gemini

HUYEN: Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Apple plans to launch a search tool in iOS 26.4 in March, integrated into Siri called "World Knowledge Answers." The current version entirely uses Apple's own models, though Apple is testing using a custom version of Google's Gemini, running on Apple servers, to summarize results. Apple is also considering using Gemini or Claude for a planner module. Gurman says Apple is considering adding it to Safari and Spotlight as well. The article also indicates Apple is no longer considering acquiring another company like Perplexity or Mistral.

Adobe Premiere is Coming to iPhone and iPad on September 30
Adobe to bring its video editing app Premiere to iPhones

HUYEN: A couple of new pieces of software came to Apple devices. Instagram launched its first iPad-specific version of the app, instead of just doubling the size of the phone app. It shows a feed of reels on opening and lets you organize posts chronologically. Comments and DMs appear in a column next to the images they go with. And Adobe is going the other way, bringing the Adobe Premiere video editor to the iPhone as well as iPad on September 30th. It will be free to use, but you'll need to pay if you want to take advantage of Firefly AI assistance. You can pre-order the free app on the App Store now. An Android version is in the works, but no ETA on that yet.

OpenAI and Perplexity also reportedly considered acquiring the browser company. Atlassian co-founder and CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes told CNBC “It’s really about taking Arc’s SaaS application experience and power user features, and Dia’s AI and elegance and speed and sort of svelte nature, and Atlassian’s enterprise know-how, and working out how to put all that together into Dia, or into the AI part of the browser.”

TOM: Andrew writes:
I heard you struggling with the new Authy app on office hours. I also think the new app sucks and they broke all the photos THEY originally added. I had to go to Settings->Accounts and edit the icons and account names. I guess no one at Authy has multiple google accounts.

Oh, wow, that was a fascinating insight on Authy! I only use it with single accounts on each service, so I *loved* the new update, because it made the logos much bigger, and made it obvious which service (Patreon, Google, Dropbox, etc.) I was grabbing the code for, and the UI just looked nicer in general to me. But I totally see what you guys are referring to! If this was the Microsoft authenticator app, where I have multiple work apps plus my Xbox one plus a personal... I'd be annoyed too. Seems like maybe the username portion needs to be rethought by Authy!

Patchy mist in Ponty, it really is Autumnal 🍂. So many bridges. However, Matter over Threads. Worried about Mr HTD's wallet. Actually where hasn't HTD worked before. Great inside knowledge. Thank you for the mention. Andy goes Sports ⚽️ Thank you for the tech news.
