JASON: Let’s start with what you need to know with the big story.
BIG STORY
Google wants to make sideloading Android apps safer by verifying developers’ identities
JASON: Google plans to require all developers, even those distributing apps outside the Play Store, to verify their identities. Google says its aim is to increase accountability and protect users from bad apps and malware with the move.
In order to comply, developers must submit information like a legal name, address, email, and phone number within the new Android Developer Console. Larger organizations will be required to submit a website address and DUNS (Data Universal Numbering System) number, a unique 9-digit number that is used globally to identify businesses. Rollout will begin in select countries in September 2026 with a global rollout throughout 2027.
It's worth noting that this allows hobbyists and students to avoid the $25 registration fee required if you submit to the Google Play Store, and the personal information submitted is not published by Google. But the change has some concerned that this makes Android a less open platform.
I checked with Huyen who lives and breathes Android development, here's what she had to say: "with all the malware (on the platform), Google has to do something to try to stem the tide and if you're going to create a commercial app(...) creating a business entity to your protect yourself is not a bad thing and probably the preferable thing. There is more friction but this isn't the early days anymore."
Huyen also compares against the Apple side of things: "for at least as long as when I was last doing iOS (2011?) you generally will find yourself needing an Apple Developer Account, which is $99 generally $299 for enterprise."

BRIEFS
Framework is now selling the first gaming laptop that lets you easily upgrade its GPU — with Nvidia’s blessing
TOM: Framework has launched the Laptop 16, a unique update that allows users to upgrade its GPU with AMD 7700S and Nvidia RTX 5070 options. Previously, models shipped only with AMD Radeon RX 7700S. Framework has now redesigned the expansion bay to allow for an easy swap in of graphics card components that can take place using six total screw and two minutes of time. It also includes an updated cooling system with a new blade design to the fans and Honeywell thermal interface material. This makes it possible for buyers to upgrade the module to improve graphics on the laptop instead of purchasing an entirely new machine. Preorders start at $1499 without the new GPU, and $2,199 with the new GPU installed.
AT&T to Buy EchoStar Spectrum Licenses for About $23 Billion
JASON: US Telco, AT&T, will acquire spectrum licenses from EchoStar for around $23 billion in an all-cash deal that gives AT&T around 50 MHz of low and mid-band spectrum. EchoStar has been looking to avoid bankruptcy as it addresses regulatory pressures related to its underused wireless spectrum. EchoStar announced it will continue to operate in the US under the Boost brand as a hybrid mobile network operator. The deal is expected to close by mid-2026, pending regulatory approval. If it goes through, AT&T will gain significant ground in the US market while EchoStar steps back from its own expansion efforts.
Google Gemini’s AI image model gets a ‘bananas’ upgrade
TOM: Google launched Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, an upgrade to its AI image model within the Gemini chatbot that let's users make photo edits with simple text instructions. The update aims to keep faces and details consistent and accurate. Social media buzz has focused on the fact that an anonymous model that appeared in LMArena called "nano-banana" was in fact the new Gemini image editor. Google says it has added safeguards like watermarking and employed rules against explicit images, in an effort to stop abuse of the platform. The new feature is now live for all Gemini users.

Instagram’s new feature helps college students connect with others on campus
TikTok’s latest feature lets college students find and connect with classmates
JASON: Last week TikTok announced its feature directed at letting its college users find and connect with each other on campus. Now, Instagram is offering a similar feature after a lengthy testing process. Students in the US can add their college or university profile after a verification step through UNiDAYS which both services has partnered with to confirm student status. TOM: Tim writes:
I was telling my wife just the other day how creative you all are. Experiment Week is another example of that superb creativity in action. Thanks!
I believe I have written DTNS before about your terrific production values, but let me say again how much I value and appreciate how you make your podcasts. This is only the second time I have listened to every episode of Experiment Week. ...
