January 2022 DTNS Update

Happy New Year!
We head into 2022 looking forward to an immediate deluge of announcements, as usual, from CES. Though not everything is as usual. We had planned to send Rich and Amos to CES to gather some extra content and set up a place to chat with folks at the show, but alas those folks wouldn't be there. With so many big companies canceling their in-person presence at CES, most of the people we would normally talk to decided not to go. So we won't be sending them after all.
Still, CES will happen and we expect nothing less than the long list of things companies hope to someday ship. We'll do out best to cut through the hype and tell you the important things to understand.
As some of you heard on my editor's desk, later this month I'll be kicking off our planning for the year and that will lead to a survey asking you opinions about things related to the show. Look for that in February.
Also Dr. Niki will have a series on Scientists in Tech coming mid month looking at the crossover between the world of research and the world of tools and things we use. Dilsad Dagtekin is a Turkish biologist working on the effects of seasons on wildlife populations. Grant Coffey is the research database manager at Crow Canyon Archaeological center in Southwestern Colorado. He pilots drones to survey ancient pueblo archaeological sites and find structures that are otherwise difficult to see. Dr. Susan Leemburg, a neuroscientist who works at Charles University in the Czech Republic studies “teleportation” in rats-- or rather how she tricks rats into thinking they’ve been teleported. AND Dr. Georgi Trenchev, a plasma physicist at the University of Antwerp who tells how to build our own plasma reactor and why we definitely should not do that.
