Daily Tech Headlines?
Added 2016-05-24 18:44:08 +0000 UTCI’ve been toying with the idea for years having a separate show of just headlines for people who don’t want a long daily conversational show and just want to keep up. In fact TheaterMonkey even operates a volunteer RSS feed where he edits out just the headlines from the current show http://feeds.feedburner.com/DTNS_Headlines
But I think I’ve come up with a plan that would not add a lot to the daily workload and give people the option of getting just the headlines each day.
This would also give DTNS more flexibility for conversation. Most of you have said you love the show for the conversations we have, so we'd be able to lean into that even more.
Here’s the idea.
Daily Tech Headlines
- A separate RSS feed from the main show.
- Not recorded live
- Headlines written in the morning and then recorded and published.
- One host (for ease of publication)
- Approximately 10 minutes
DTNS (the current show)
- Same as it is now
- Change headlines section's name to "Top Stories' just to avoid the confusion
- Flexibility to have longer discussions around top stories when warranted.

As someone who would just love the idea of a quick tech news update but doesn't always have the time to listen to the full discussion, having the option to have just the headlines in my podcast app would be great! Can't wait!

2016-05-25 20:11:37 +0000 UTCI listened to the "alpha" yesterday and loved it! I'm not a regular DTNS viewer/listener due to time constraints but a headlines show would be on daily rotation. I'd be curious to see whether you'd gain additional listeners and hopefully patrons should DTH become a reality. I suppose only time will tell. Thank you for experimenting.

2016-05-24 23:03:53 +0000 UTCHate to be a dissenter but don't really see where this particularly adds value to future listeners. I have no issue listening to the current headlines and then skipping the discussion. This is after all a podcast not a radio show. If you want to add value why not diversify and put the headlines out as an email blast. That can be done by a producer (sorry Roger) and from a marketing standpoint gives you an email distribution list ready made. Effectively send the headline shown notes out by email and leave current show as is.

2016-05-24 19:58:52 +0000 UTCWe already do that (as noted above) but it's quite long. The idea is the two versions server different purposes. One is for people who want a relatively brief more comprehensive look at the day's news. The show now is more a of a discussion of the day's news.

Is the current method not feasible going forward (I'm assuming here you could cut out the headlines as a separate export quite easily instead of recording something completely new...otherwise it makes sense why it would need to change).

2016-05-24 19:49:02 +0000 UTCWe'll have to work that out as we go. My guess is the DTNS top stories might get a little shorter? Just to have room for discussion. But not by much. It used to only be 6-8 stories in the early days and it has rown over the years/ So maybe it could get back to 6-8. We'll just see what feels right. There will definitely be overlap but the idea is it's discussion and substantive commentary in DTNS vs. a shorter presentation in Headlines.
