THE WOOD ELVES ARE REAL! BTS #93

OK let's deal with this click bait title first. Recently, my caster sent me QC versions of the Witch and the Warrior. The Witch is further along in the finessing process, but my caster also wanted me to check out the warrior for any potential larger issues.

This isn't all the parts, but you get the general crispy idea. Oh, can't forget about this little guy, RIP.

And how about the warrior?

He is JACKED. Anyways, now onto fixing up some small problems with the models (3D print lines in the casting, little bits of resin, some anatomy problems, etc.) and then we can make final ones! In terms of mini painting, I finished Glaurio Ven Alten III recently.

I am super happy with the result and can't wait to paint the other two that will be used in my game of Cursed City! Ok, onto scratch building a sexy scifi building. It all started with a plan...

I wanted my building to have an identity like school, lighthouse, gas station, etc. and then interpret it in a scifi setting. I went with car repair shop/car wash. I have a little office space and a garage next to it with some big ol' cannisters of cleaning fluid? This is when I realized I would need to dust off my highschool geometry skills to figure out some angles. Once I had a general idea done, I made an SVG file of shapes that would be cut out of styrene on my cricut.

Before cutting everything out, I did some tests.

Doesn't look too bad, maybe needs a little filling and sanding.

I also created this little 135 degree angle guides so I would put the panels at the correct angle. I later reasoned that making these chunkier and out of resin on my 3D printer would be more helpful so I designed some in fusion 360 and printed them out. The next test I wanted to do was a panel line test. If I could cut complex shapes, I should be able to also cut panel lines at a lower pressure so I don't cut all the way through the styrene.

This is really tricky. The cricut can't cut all the way through styrene that's very thick, so I'm working with .2" stock. The line that I cut needs to be deepened with a triangle file and sometimes it feels like I'm going to snap a wall in half. I might skip this in the future. With my two tests complete, it was time to cut out all the shapes.

And start assembling!

buuuuuuuuuut I messed up some math apparently.

Each panel has an isosceles trapezoid on top and bottom of it and I had a really hard time figuring out the internal angles of it. It looks like I made them too acute. I actually don't know how to do the math for this, so if anyone can figure it out, ping me on discord. Lastly, I bought a beefy ballhead.

I'm planning on using my BMPCC6k for my painting camera for videos, and I need something more substantial to keep it afloat. To reduce the amount of twisting forces on my camera arm, I installed a second bar in my rig so that the bar was closer to immediately above its final resting place.

That's all for now! Don't forget to PAINT MORE MINIS!

I think.... its 78.75 degrees, this is if all mitered to 45s don't ask me to show my work

I’m always really impressed with scratch builds. They take another level of imagination, planning and talent ✌️

Woo!

Wood Elves look great, paint job on Mustache Santa looks great, the building looks dope. Great BTS update, Scott. Loving the energy and happiness that’s coming through on this one
