Breaking Bad 501 'Live Free or Die' - FULL Reaction

A hard drive works by physically storing 1's and 0's. These 1's and 0's can be "translated" by the computer's processor to represent information such as a document or a picture. So how does it store the 1 or 0? In a hard drive there is a shiny metal plater disk that is divided up into billions of little microscopic areas. The hard drive can magentize one of these tiny areas to represent a 1, or demagnetize one of the areas to represent a 0. So for example the question mark character "?" translates to this 00111111. So if this "?" was stored on your hard drive the computer would see it on the hard drive's metal plater as 2 areas that are not magnetized (00) followed by 6 areas that are magnetized(111111). It reads this specific pattern and it knows that together the 00111111 represents a question mark. That is essentially how things are stored on a hard drive like that. So if you take a powerful magnet to a hard drive it essentially will set some or all of your microscopic areas to a magnetized 1, thus completely changing what information is stored on the hard drive and essentially wiping all the information clean. More modern "solid state" hard drives dont use this technique. However magnetic hard drives are still used today and certainly were used in 2009 when i think this episode takes place, so it's entirely possible and was a BRILLIANT idea from Jesse.

Great discussion at the end! Yeah Walter feels more in control than ever, he's experiencing the biggest power trip of his life after outsmarting and killing the almighty Gus Fring.
