It was not a dumb plan, I think you guys just do not realise how much of a monster Daemon really is. Rhaenyra asked for Aemond, but Daemon 100% told them to go after the kids if they could not get Aemond. Daemon knew that if you could not get the best prize, the heir to Aegon would be a really good "prize" as well. Daemon is also the very definition of "our monster" The plan did not fail, and Daemon is happy and might even try to push it off to Rhaenyra as B/Cs doing, but I think he will stand for it. If Rhaenyra is to win and her heirs be safe by now, they would sadly have to die or be sent to the wall etc. Such is the tragic reality of almost all feudal succession crisis between house branches.
