Oooh thank you, this was my first time re-watching Dunkirk in a while and something was pinging in my brain but not connecting! Also thanks Normies for this reaction, very enjoyable and engaged couch!

Ashleep

Oppenheimer is the better film, but Dunkirk is easier to watch over and over again cuz it's not 3 hours long.

I forgot about the deck guns. But once surfaced a u-boat captain would have to worry about the guns of any Royal navy ship nearby. Like you said, the U-boats had bigger fish to fry.

With "Oppenheimer", it feels like every element of the film was better. "Oppenheimer" deserved to win seven Academy Awards because it was hands down the best picture of the year and was the best at the awards it earned. While Dunkirk certainly deserved all its praise including the various technical awards it earned, it was not the best film of that year. I also felt more connected to "Oppenheimer" because the topics brought up are extremely relevant now.

Anyone else recognize the kid Peter on the civilian boat from HOTD? Me neither.

KaydenC

Yeah I think I like Oppenheimer more just cause there's more talking.

Movie links? OHHH... I was looking for Wiki Links... My name is Lemi Winks, btw.

FYI, a third of the people evacuated were French. Over 100,000. I didn't know that until recently.

MPH

I prefer Dunkirk, but I think Oppenheimer is probably a better film, objectively.

MPH

Still waiting for that Fast x lol.

It would have been a waste of resources for them to target the civilian boats. The U-Boats and bombers were focusing on higher priority targets. U-Boats also had guns which were used to take out smaller ships.

Chaos T

Oppenheimer by a hair.

Chaos T

I think Suraj was correct, german u-boats are probably unable to target hit the small boats with torpedos. The torpedos would pass harmlessly under the small boats. I think. This takes place in May-June 1940 and D-Day was 4 years later. The famous "The Battle of Britain" took place shortly after Dunkirk. That battle lasted from July to October 1940 and involved the german air force trying to destroy the British air force the RAF (Royal Air Force). The germans lost the "Battle of Britain" and after that they gave up their plans to invade Britain. But the germans would continue to try bombing Britain occasionally. You guys should watch Masters of the Air, the third Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg's produced miniseries. It's about the American bomber and fighter pilots in WWII. They do a good job explaining to the viewer the complicated plane stuff.

YOOO LET’S GOO Getting to watch this in IMAX was one of the most unforgettable movie theater going experiences I’ve ever had. The sound engineering was so incredibly well executed that it was tricking my brain into thinking that real bullets are flying at me! I was literally crouching as low as possible in the theater seat because my body was in fight-or-flight mode while watching a movie. I knew that I was perfectly safe, but my body was SCREAMING. Remarkable film to experience in IMAX 👏👏👏

@eric.na.goo.yen

Which do you like better? Oppenheimer or Dunkirk?
