These are the Top 5 you all voted the most for in the previous poll (https://www.patreon.com/posts/boondocks-you-1-103564840) . Now you have to decide, for real for real, which anime you want the replacement to be!
--We want this new show to be a new-ish short-ish anime, so that was mostly our criteria for these choices. We did consult our discord and patreon community before this poll was posted, so we hope all is vetted and good!

It's a case-by-case evaluation. If the selection of anime is a lot shorter than an anime that can take years to complete, taking that into consideration makes sense; like it made sense in the FMAB poll due to it being considerably shorter than the other anime in the final poll. Both Frieren and Solo Leveling are short series. Series length wouldn't be a factor in my vote. Also... there are a lot of female neckbeards. It used to be a physical description but now the term has evolved into a personality trait/attitude.

Its just another generic battle shounen with main character that has nothing really going for him, mediocre plot / writing... but it HAS GOOD FIGHTS and a really beautiful animation and sometimes thats what you want in a show. You can just turn off your brain and enjoy some good fights and thats that. But as a whole, it is a mediocre show compared with Frieren

You would think we have enough shonen with Samurai Champloo, Fullmetal Alchemist(Again), Bleach, Demon Slayer, AND My Hero Academia. Here's my write-in vote for Madoka Magica, Steins;Gate, Psycho Pass, and Made in Abyss. BTW, shonen is no doubt my favorite genre of anime. I've seen every anime on that poll except Frieren which I plan to watch soon. But overall shonen is like different flavor Marvel movies. It's hard not to like them and they're easy to digest which is why they're extremely popular. But like the Marvel movies, most of them are pretty forgettable.

I think Frieren can be a slow burn, but story and character wise is the best of the options. It's just long enough that you can really understand each main character. There's a lot of emotional maturity in following along with Frieren (the character) and her growth that is lacking in a show like SL (which is basically the opposite, the MC loses relatability as the show goes on). PS: I didn't do a direct comparison to SpyxFamily because at this point they are not direct competitors (it's Frieren vs. SL) - I personally would love a SxF reaction and I think the crew would absolutely love it (i would even wager they would like it more than any other option, including my pick of Frieren, if only because Anya is the cutest thing to ever exist and because the humor makes it extra endearing)

2024-05-16 16:31:39 +0000 UTCWhich is my point, those shows in the west would be classified as cartoons however by the current definition of what anime is those shows could easily be classified as anime, conversely by that same definition however Blue Eyed Samurai would not be classified as such as it’s creation, production and most importantly animation are not created within Japan. I disagree, it’s pretty easy for me to classify it as adult animation much like how a series like Rick and Morty would not be viewed as anime to western audiences. Whether people think the term needs to change or go doesn’t change how people particularly people like the Normies currently view the term which is likely why they have made their future slot criteria be clearly defined based on their interpretations (the previous poll was “classic” anime but nobody in their right mind would consider a series like Black Clover which is 8 years old as “classic”).

As you pointed out many of cartoons of this era of US TV were animated in Japan. In the 80's, Thundercats art style and animation was almost indistinguishable from Japanese anime like Voltron. I don't see why cartoons published by a US company but its art style and animation get created in Japan can't be considered an anime. Overload, I don't disagree with much with what you said but the western definition needs to go or change. The "Western definition" of anime was created by gatekeeping comicbook store owner types and internet losers to begin with. Western weebs need to get over themselves on a lot of anime stuff. It's true Blue-Eyed Samurai isn't an anime in the "traditional western" sense but it isn't a traditional western cartoon either. If Blue-Eyed Samurai was on a Western Cartoon poll it wouldn't probably stand a chance against DC, Marvel, Ben 10, Star Wars type cartoon stuff. Blue-Eyed Samurai is not an animated series that's geared towards the general audience who likes traditional western cartoons. It's difficult to classify what genre of animation Blue-Eyed Samurai is.

Solo Leveling would be 3 months. Given that the show will start in June if it’s Solo Leveling that wins a new series will be started by September, if Frieren then it’s December/January (depending on if they do the first 4 in 1). It starts at the end of a journey and we get to follow an ancient character and the neat differences of the decades from her perspective. I wouldmt say it's slow, just that it loves it's atmosphere. But the difference between this and other shows is even in the quiet moments the animation is going off. Also the exam arc in the last 10 episodes is great.

Frieren is good, but Solo leveling is short it’ll take them less than 3 months to finish it where Frieren will take over half a year. If SL is first we can get 2 shows out of this by the end of the year versus 1 show

It requires multiple people to do an extra thing when it's not needed at all. I would rather see reactors experiencing a mediocre dub than miss crucial information. Some people might say it's too slow for a reaction series, but i disagree. Dr. Stone is ok but i could never get into it the same way others did (and i've read the whole manga, it falls off imo). Still would be a good pick though. Spy Family is nice, but having watched Blind Wave's reactions to it i don't think it's a good "reaction" series. Fire Force i've also read the manga of, has some very nice animated fights and the story later on becomes verrrry interesting, but the fanservice is a bit much. Also season one has weird directing choices that were divisive. And Solo Levelling sucks. It just does. Horrible characters, horrible "plot", horrible world....everything about it is bottom tier. People will say it at least has good fights but not really imo, they're animated very well but they're boring as fuck. It's just another generic power fantasy self insert series.

It’ll hit more. Dr. Stone is a fun show with no stakes you’re gonna feel. Spy Family is good and never gets great. I think there’s a show called Buddy Daddies that does the concept better with two dads. Solo Leveling Up is a fun concept but aren’t we tired of fantasy shows that’s use video game mechanics. Fire Force Sucks.

I haven't seen Solo Leveling but have heard it's decent despite the common themes and characters it shares with a lot of anime.
