I personally like the ending of the novella better, because this is just SO bleak and depressing and the original story ended with a glimmer of hope, but I can totally get why King digs it so much.

What a heartbreaking ending. FYI, the original story did not have this ending and King has gone on record stating he loved it and wish he had wrote this ending himself.
