Really enjoyed the reaction :)
Oh my, this episode! SMG is just slaying it ;) this season.
I think this episode really tells a lot about Buffy as a character. When it comes to the demons, vampires and supernaturall she is so strong, capabale, and a real hero. She can just handle it, and finds a way to win every time.
But when it comes to real life, human sickness (if that´s the case) and struggles she is so small, helpless, and fragile. Wich makes her frustrated and she tries to find something to fight instead (as she says "I need to do something, fight something). And I think SMG really potraits that duality so well.
And that last scenes just hurts, but is so brilliant. How Railey tries to talk to her, comfort her and be the support she probably needs. But she´s just not there yet. And the way they use the closing of the door as a meataphor for what´s happening to their relationship.

nom de guerre is like nom de plumme. both are french for assumed names. beast from xmen would use nom de guerre all the time. once when storm summoned a hurricane "and i used to wonder, how she obtained her nom de guerre". the difference? nom de plumme LITERALLY means pen name so an assumed name in writting vs nom de guerre which is literally war name. so since they are super heroes you could say nom de guerre is french for code name. this one ep just thought you french, spanish and japanese. this is total head canon and i cant find any info online that supports this theory but that star labs scientist with the glasses is giving Doctor 13 vibes. he looks so much like the character physically but also has this pocket watch they go out of the way to high light in every scene even when it falls off, they make a point to do a whole zoom in on it like its important. they say he's based on a producer for the show but without that info, all i see is doctor 13

that commenter is misinformed. milestone was its OWN comicbook label and then was BOUGHT by dc comics AFTER it was already established and then they slowly phased them out cause thats what big companies do. the reason marvel and dc were the big two for so long is cause they would do shit like this all the time: marvel bought malibu comics, put some marvel characters in there for a while and totally changed its tone and the sells of course dropped so they folded it and now they have characters they havent used for 30 years; dc did this with wildstorm and milestone comics as well. closed the company and only have integrated a hand full of the thousands of characters that existed that they see are profitable. so we have wildcats in the dcu but no gen13. we have static, but no shadow cabinet. its really sad

#sundayrundown my team is here! love the runaways and love how they didnt use subtitles for asami. i view that like if she was speaking basic spanish like "hola" or "gracias" and they would translate that either. fun fact time!: The four runaways are based on the ethnic members of the Super Friends 80s cartoon: virgil = black vulcan; eduadro dorado = el dorado; tye = apache chief; asami = samurai.

It's interesting you guys talked about the heaviness of this Buffy episode, because I think S5 in general is a heavy season. S4 was a transitional season between childhood and adulthood and S5 is very much about what happens when you become an adult and how different the things you deal with can be. So showing Buffy dealing with something so "normal" ,but heavy, as her mum being sick, as well as having to be the big sister and hold it all together, is a very deliberate move on Joss's part and it's a theme that will continue for the rest of the series.

It's good writing from Whedon and the writing team. This season is set up to where, on the first watch, Dawn could have been the reason behind Joyce's brain tumor. Reality was altered so Dawn could exist and suddenly a normally healthy Joyce is sick with something that hasn't been shown before.

#sundayrundown i want to jump onto this surj. i personally have only seen the other medical symbol: hermes' caduceus. did some research and saw there are two symbols: hermes' staff, a caduceus (two snake heads, on a winged staff) not aclepius' rod (one snake on a globe ended staff). though i know the name of asclepius as the world's first doctor, i only ever knew of hermes rod being tied to him, not knowing that he had his own symbol. so i had to do me some research, so thanks for that discussion at the end. i guess over time their two symbols got inter mixed, so we have both as medical symbols. the only explanation i can find is western ignorance. from google regarding hermes' staff: It is often used as a symbol of medicine, especially in the United States, despite its ancient and consistent associations with trade, liars, thieves, eloquence, negotiation, alchemy, and wisdom.

#SundayRundown - I forgot how many moving parts this show has. There’s so many story points that’s all converging into one. It’s still dope that Young Justice is you guys first DC journey as a group (PLEASE START THE SHOW ASAP RANA!!.. ❤️❤️). I know some of you have seen certain shows like Batman The Animated Series, Justice League, Static Shock, Teen Titans, etc.; maybe this is something that could be asked for the crew as well but since you guys have a more casual to first-time view of DC.. is it weird, interesting or cool that yall are seeing some noteworthy characters are interacting with eachother for the first time especially since this show has some meetups/teamups that only occur here. Like seeing Lex Luther & Static/Virgil was a cool little nerd moment seeing as they’ve never interacted in any other medium

riley is just insecure. if i was in his position, i would be there for her in the ways that matters EMOTIONALLY. he can take care of joyce and dawn while she runs off and fights glory. and he was doing partially that with keeping dawn from the hospital but instead of leaving her at home alone while i go get vamp drained, i'd stay with the LITERAL child and watch over her. on buffy's part, she needs to work on her communication. everyone but him knew she was at the hospital with joyce. thats on her not him. with proper communication they could have set it up so that buffy can put her full focus onto glory and not be as worried about her mom and dawn cause riley would be taking care of that. put riley's need to protect and be needed expresses itself in the physical. he doesnt see that by taking care of her loved ones he IS taking care of buffy and being that traditional guy that he is and therefore IS needed by her. they both need couples counseling to work on how to communicate better with each other and how to be less selfish. right now she got too much going on, she dont have time for you to be needy. once moms is better then we taking a couple's trip, no phones and we can selfish then, not now.

Ha, ha, ha, I love the consternation over James Menlo. As demons go he could probably pass as a human with a skin condition so he's likely the most integrated into human society of anyone we've seen. It could easily be an assumed name. What's he gonna do in the grocery, sign his checks as Snorchak the Devourer? As for the guns he didn't have claws, wrist blades, horns, or anything. With no inborn demon weapons he went to the store and bought a piece. Anyway, that's the way I look at it. PS If anyone knows Deadwood Menlo was played by W. Earl Brown who also played Swearengen's righthand man Dan Dority.

I watched Buffy as it aired as a tween and teen. One of the (still) most frustrating aspects of season five was how they kept writing Dawn like she was 8 or 10 years-old. I forgot how much it continued. Michelle and I are only days apart in age, and I was always baffled why they're treating her like this and she's acting like a child despite being in the middle of high school.

(Am saying this as someone who’s worked for close to a decade in mental health/substance abuse settings with young adults)
Riley’s struggles are very real but I don’t like that the show frames Buffy as the one at fault for his problems
It’s Riley’s job to communicate with her about his struggles/insecurities
A partner in Buffy’s position not prioritizing the other partner doesn’t put them at fault for their partner harming themselves or abusing substances, especially considering how little Riley has communicated with Buffy
Riley needs legitimate help, it’s awful that these urges have to be present in his life
I think mysefl and most fans wouldn’t mind this plot line if multiple episodes didn’t frame Buffy as the one responsible for Riley’s choices
If she was actually very much in the wrong that would be one thing but she’s literally just trying to keep her head above water to be there for her mom and sister
Not being prioritized or loved in a relationship really really hurts but at the end of the day these problems are his and it would be better to break up and get help if these are the urges he struggles with
Really recommend Passion Of A Nerd’s video for the next episode, he dives into a lot of the more problematic elements of the way the relationship is treated in an otherwise excellent season (especially the Xander scenes)

Agree with large majority of everything you wrote but have one slight disagreement
Buffy can be inattentive and not prioritize him sure but I think it’s Riley’s job to communicate with her about it
His behavior isn’t her fault (not saying that you’re saying that), he has his own demons. A spouse abusing drugs and self-harming out of hurt for the other spouse not being there for them is the one making those choices

I defend Riley often because I hate when fans dog Riley as if the way the relationship is going at this point is all his doing without calling Buffy out on her shit too (I feel like most fans tend to always side with Buffy on anything no matter what, which isn't fair to the other characters) but I do agree that. He lost everything at the end of season 4, essentially "risking it all" for Buffy, more or less, and all he basically had left WAS Buffy. His career, his military family & friends. He doesn't even really have the Scoobies because those are Buffy friends. When Riley considered leaving the initiative before, Buffy told and basically that he can figure his life out, but I'm not sure Buffy has helped him with any of that, which is rough considering that he has been trying to supportive of her and her needs. He's definitely lost and needs to find his personal path outside the relationship. But honestly, I think that's my main gripe with the Scoobies significant others in general. They tend to make their lives revolve around the Scoobies Gang and their partner instead of expanding their lives outside of the group. That's why I appreciate that moment in the episode "Family" when Willow comes in Tara's room and tells her that they have to go Scooby research, and Tara has to sit there a tell Willow that her family was there visiting her (which Willow already was aware) and that she can't drop everything all the time for the Scoobies, reminding her that her life doesn't revolve around the group. Granted, she was dealing other stuff at the time she and didn't want to discuss that at the moment, but I respect the fact that it was said because it needed to be. Just because someone is dating a Scooby, doesn't mean their lives should revolve around it the way their do.
With that said, Buffy hasn't really been the best girlfriend either. Riley tends to come off as an afterthough a lot of times. Like, how is your own boyfriend, who she's been basically dating for almost a year now the last to know your mother is possibly sick? Even last episode, after all of Riley telling her his insecurities about losing his strength and ability to fight the episode prior that he was even willing to let himself potentially die over it, she basically tried to bench him. The most trained person in the gang and he's not allowed to patrol? Xander has literally patrolled by himself even back in high school. She didn't even talk to him about it and had to find out from Buffy's sister. She's always have had terrible communication issues, especially with whomever she's dating, for one. I'd go deeper but I don't want to feel like I'm spoiling stuff.

Well as you saw Virgil aka Static and the other former abducted were growing sick & tired of Star Labs and really I don't blame them cause they've been a little too strict on them. Also turns out Blue Beetle was turned by Green after all cause he was acting somewhat different out of control and didn't even attempt to save the others when Red Volcano had them. At least Virgil and the others were finally getting a hang of their powers through all that, but now they've been offered a deal with the devil which is Lex Luthor. I know y'all can't wait to see what happens next!

#SundayRundown - After watching the reaction/discussion. Had some fun facts for you guys. 1) There is a time gap of one month and four days between the events of the episode prior to this one and this one, making it the longest season time jump between episodes in the entire series. 2) This is more of a hindsight thing but not hearing the scarab talk at all should’ve been a hint for the audience that something was off with Jaime 3) Some of the stuff Asami is saying is “I have no idea what's going on, but I'll follow”, “Trouble! I like what they did with Tye Longshadow’s power in Young Justice. In the old cartoon Super Friends, there’s a guy called Apache Chief (Tye’s counterpart) who’s able to increase his physical body’s size. Whereas Tye astral projects a giant energy body over his real body. It looks cooler to me.

Here's a fun fact: the vampire that Riley let drink from him was Sandy, who was the girl VampWillow drained in order to show everyone she meant business when she held the Bronze hostage in Doppelgangland.
Apparently someone fed her vampire blood after Willow drained her, and she's played by the same actress here and has been confirmed as the same character.
I also noticed that everyone was surprised that the fake memories surrounding Dawn are so thorough that she even remembers Angel despite that she didn't exist when he was around. The really amazing thing is that even Angel (and presumably Cordelia and Wesley) remembers Dawn as always having been there, even though he has technically never even met her.

#SundayRunDown Riley’s main problem is he no longer has his own identity. He’s put too much of himself into Buffy and lost focus of his own mission. Riley doesn’t have anything else going on in his life other than her. That’s a recipe for relationship disaster.

This is correct and unfortunately it was a theory that was often (not always, but often) associated with fans that hated Dawn. And honestly it always seemed to me like these fans were looking for more reasons to hate on the character of Dawn and blaming her for Joyce’s medical issue seemed like an easy thing to do.
Edit: Just to be clear though, it doesn’t seem like the Normies are hating Dawn and just came to this theory on their own.

Fun Fact: the Runaways are homages to superheroes created for the old Super Friends cartoon series. The original characters were named Apache Chief, Samurai, and El Dorado. Virgil/Static is a stand-in for Black Vulcan/Black Lightning (there were some legal issues that meant the cartoon couldn’t use Black Lightning so Super Friends changed it to Black Vulcan). While they were meant to diversify the cast they’re mostly remembered as cringy stereotypes. But most Justice League related shows will try to adapt the characters in some way, such as The Ultimen from Justice League: Unlimited.

#sundayrundown Sorry for the long text, but I just wanted to let you know that while you guys’ theory that Dawn’s presence or the memory alteration is what is causing Joyce to have her issues, this isn’t a new theory by fans nor one that’s been ever proven and in fact more evidence points to it being the opposite and that Joyce is just having normal real life medical crap happening to her.
1) No one, but Joyce is experiencing this because the monks’ spell not only altered Buffy and her families memories, but everyone in the world that may have interacted with Dawn in anyway (for example the school system). This also isn’t first time we see this type of spell either, we saw it in the season 4 episode Superstar, where Jonathan alters the memories of the whole world and no such side affect like what Joyce is experiencing was ever mentioned then or now.
2) In 5x5 Buffy does the trance that would help her see what magical spell is effecting her mom, but while she discovers the truth about Dawn, Buffy also notes that nothing magical is affecting Joyce’s health, meaning it has to be natural.
3) And finally this is up Whedon and the writers wheelhouse, they would totally have Buffy deal with so much magical/mystical bull crap and then throw the realities of dealing with a sick family member whose dealing with a real world medical issue. This is these writers MO, of throwing in real world crap into this fantasy world to mess with Buffy.
Now I don’t want to dissuade you, if you all still want to believe in the theory that Joyce’s medical issue is due to Dawn and the monk’s spell then go right ahead, but I just wanted to do a counter argument to it. Anyway keep up the great reactions and I hope you keep enjoying and loving my favorite season of this amazing show.
