That's like saying the Demon didn't make the guy shoot himself in the head. Yes the Demon amplifies fear, but that fear makes you do things you wouldn't normally do. They literally HUNG A MAN IN A HOTEL LOBBY and stored a body in a freezer instead of calling the police! I don't get how it's so unbelievable that it made Judy do what she did. She asked for forgiveness because she felt guilty(she doesn't know anything about any demon, she just believed she got Angel killed. Which was why the demon was able to feed on her)

King Medjai

Imitation of Life (1959) is one of my all-time favorite movies.

Alison

I haven't seen anyone talk about "My Stepmother is an Alien" for decades and forgot Alyson Hannigan was in that film. Per the usual, Jon Lovitz was up to shenanigans in that film.

Chaos T

Re Angel 2x2 Obviously not one of the Normies is a fan of classic Hollywood. Missed all the references/homages to Psycho, Rebel without a cause and Imitation of life.

Vicky N

fun fact: watched a review for my stepmom is an alien (moviebitches, check them out they are AWESOME) and i totally forgot about this kismet first meeting. the step daughter? WILLOW. her prom date? OZ! yes, this is allyson hannigan in her FIRST film looking like season 4 will with brown hair and seth in his fiftieth role (he was a child STAR in all the commercials and tv shows). they were so adorbs and seth had braces sigh. who would know that a decade later they would be reunited as a couple again on buffy lol. #fate

rickie woodson

The only good thing it has going for it is Mark Hamill delivering some of the great Joker bits from the original story. It's just a pretty grim story that even Alan Moore himself says he regrets writing (because he didn't realise they were gonna make it a thing that actually happened in the main DC universe, he thought he was just writing an elseworlds Joker story in isolation) and then they also made some additions that made it EVEN worse and more distasteful somehow.

Kongolor

It was pretty funny when like 10 minutes into the episode some of them are going "ugh did the show need this" or "but where is this goooooing?" and it's like, I dunno guys maybe give them at least an episode or two. Suraj pretty much the only one going "maybe we should trust the writers guys".

Kongolor

I hope you are joking.

Alison

#SundayRundown - Another fun episode from this season 🔥. There was so many things going on and they able to pack it all into a 21 minute episode. It’s wild how there’s technically 3 Roy Harper’s running around lol (Red Arrow, Arsenal/Speedy & Guardian who we found out was another aged up clone of the original Speedy in Episode 4). The memorial scene was also nice as we got to see Ted Kord and Jason Todd. To keep count, Tim Drake is the 3rd Robin of the 4 prominent ones (Dick, Jason, him and Damien Wayne) while Jaime is the 3rd Blue Beetle

Kuro

#sundayrundown Just finished your reaction to Buffy 5×2 and just so you guys know there is a lot of foreshadowing in Buffy and Angel so "things" don't really just pop up out of nowhere. Also season 2 of Angel is where the ball starts rollin. Try to watch 5× 7 of Buffy along with 2×7 of Angel as they're basically a single story BUT its not a true crossover ep.

All Mighty Lowercase Jay

I don't understand how YOU don't understand about Dawn... Have you guys even been WATCHING the show?! Honestly, tho... Yous guys gotta pay more attention

hannemanart

Had to double-check to see if actor Ned Beatty actually voiced Luthor's right-hand man Otis (found-out it wasn't) because they nailed the voice-acting in this episode and for such a small part. Otis in the Christopher Reeves 'Superman' films was a bit of a buffoon, but Otis in Young Justice seems like he was a bruiser employee not to be messed with. (RIP Ned Beatty) I believe Ted Kord's the second to have taken the mantle of Blue Beetle, and Jaime being the third in the comic books. Ted's the rich millionaire with incredible mechanical skills. He has a lot of beetle-modeled weapons and a giant beetle vehicle, but his buddy-relationship with Booster Gold in the Justice League is legendarily humorous material from the J.M. DeMatteis/Keith Giffen 80's era of those books. Really like YJ's take on Arsenal's introduction. In the comics it was far messier with Roy Harper literally getting his arm ripped off by the "it" villain of the time.

Chris

They are all guilty of their actions. The demon just Amplified their emotions, but all the hotel guests made their decision.

The Answer

I was so happy when you guys realized that the bellhop in Angel was the "doppel-deaner" at the end. I wanted to yell at the screen during the episode because Pat so soooo close! Even though the demon increased the people's paranoia, this episode showed how humans will cast people aside or kill them in a mob mentality. Examples: Salem witch trials, US's communist "scare", and the Midnight episode from Doctor Who.

Eddie

No spoilers, but TRUST Whedon & the writers. The introduction of Dawn at this point was not a last minute or sudden decision. Hints were given as far back as season 3 and throughout season 4. I won't point out the specific episodes, scenes and dialogue, but you did watch and react to them.

John Moreland

Mickey please stop bringing up the The Killing Joke. It is a horrible movie and has nothing to do with Jason Todd.

Blake

Luthor is a different kind of petty, when he puts his mind to something he'll go to any lengths to achieve it. It's probably why he's Superman's greatest rival, in order to fight him he has to go beyond what any human would do. For example, one time in the comics, he wanted Superboy to kill Superman. He had Superboy take him to his sick sister, who was paralyzed because of an incurable cancer. He then calmly walked over, put in a syringe, and gave her a self made cure for cancer. She immediately regained use of her legs, and was able to walk for the first time in years. In tears, she hugged her brother, who then calmly inserted another syringe that instantly returned her cancer to her, taking away the use of her legs. He promised Superboy he'd only release the cure for cancer when Superman was dead and buried. Lex is a different BREED of petty!

Shihi

I agree with what Kongolor typed. The dislike of her character at the time was unreasonable but also understandable. I haven't watched the reaction yet so Chris may have said it again, but last week his initial thought was Dawn's intro fulfilling the writing trope network TV's used for decades. People may have thought her character was introduced as an insert in an attempt to boost ratings or shake things up. As time went on and people had the ability to rewatch Buffy, the community has generally warmed up to Dawn.

Chaos T

Dawn is more likeable after rewatching the show imo... kudos to Michelle, she had some really good line deliveries even when being annoying and good chemistry with Sarah. Also whats Tom Lenk doing here lol.

Chris K.

Whether or not Judy was under the influence of the spell, she deserves forgiveness. That's the entire point of the show, saving souls and struggling for redemption. Not a bible thumper but Matthew 18:21-35 is I think one of the moral compasses of Angel

Liam Horton

Yeah I was just talking about in regards to the movies that they could react to

CodePhoenix13

yeah do not watch The Killing Joke trying to learn anything about Robin. Robin's not even in it.

Cory Stanish

Great question about whether Judy was under the spell of the demon or not! I think that she was, but that the spell is kind of like the Red Scare - it created a horrible, scary, paranoid environment, and so it’s understandable that people would make bad, self-centered decisions under those circumstances, but within that they still have some free will, and so it’s still wrong for them to “name names,” as some people did under questioning during the investigations, and as Judy did when she pointed the mob towards Angel. I also think she was punished in a similar way to how we would punish a convicted murderer – she was imprisoned for the rest of her life. And she mentioned earlier that imprisonment was exactly what she was most afraid of – being trapped like that. So I think she bears some responsibility for what she did to Angel, and I also think that she spent the rest of her life paying for it – trapped in a room, terrified of going out, and marinating in her guilt. I think that’s why Angel forgives her in the end. He made the decision to let the demon continue to torture her and all the other people in the hotel, and now he’s ready to let her rest and give her the relief of knowing that he actually survived. I think he also understands what it’s like to feel responsible for horrible actions that you did when you were under the influence of a demon/not entirely yourself.

Stayjers

The Killing Joke was more about Joker crippling Barbara as part of a plot to drive Commissioner Gordon insane. Barbara didn’t become Oracle until John Ostrander and Kim Yale’s run of Suicide Squad

Brendan O'Connor

I think it's also like, pre conditioned dislike from all the times sitcoms and stuff introduce a family member and they're super precocious and pushed as a character. Obviously Dawn is very much riffing on that trope as well and dabbles in that area but the hate feels a lil disproportionate.

Kongolor

I can attest from personal experience that the writer of Angel 2x2, Tim Minear is not only a great writer (American Horror Story, Firefly, 9-1-1, etc.) but a great person. I met him at a bar in Dallas in 2009(?), as we were both there as part of an annual event screening of Serenity to benefit Equality Now (he was a special guest, I was doing volunteer work). We became fast friends and he's been on my podcast a number of times. "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been?" was and is one of my top favorite Angel episodes. When Angel "dies" from the hanging at the hotel, everyone loses their bloodlust and mob mentality. Except for the Bellman. This is to differentiate between fear and paranoia influenced and exacerbated by the demon, and the Bellman being that bad from the start. In short, Judy was ultimately a victim of the demon, possibly the biggest victim, which is part of why Angel doesn't blame her for what happened (plus, that's just not who Angel is anymore).

John Pavlich

they realized it by the end...

Bisibia

I remember hearing at some point that Dawn was written to be closer to 10/11 before Michelle was cast at Sarah's recommendation. Might have something to do with it? Her first couple of episodes it feels like she acts a tad bit younger than she's meant to be, at least to me.

CandidCocoa

Please watch Buffy episode 7 and Angel episode 7 back to back!!!!

Courtney Scott

1. Rana was right about Dawn's actress, Michelle played the lead actress in the movie Ice Princess and she was in Gossip Girl as well. 2. I never really got the hate that a lot of people seem to immediately have for Dawn. She's just a 14-year-old little sister and while her actions might seem reckless and overly emotional they make sense for someone her age and in her position. Then again maybe I'm biased because I can relate to her, as a fellow little sister with an older sibling who is five years older and the favorite of the family.

Twili

They aren't cannon so it will just confuse them

Calvin Allen

He's under the spell he's just also an awful person

Calvin Allen

The bellboy in the Angel episode seemed too comfortable with disappearing a body as if he did it for hotel management before.

Chaos T

Buffy 4x22 "Be back before dawn"

Jontor11

Be back before Dawn

Daniel

"Are You Now or Have You Ever Been" is one of the best acted, written, and directed Angel episodes. It's also noticeable in season two the production values and set pieces are on a larger scale than the previous season and even compared to Buffy.

Chaos T

See that's why I really hate that smug baldhead fucker! He'll use deals or bribery on anyone he's done something wrong to just to save himself or whatever.

Brandon Gibbs

Oh, it was by no means a great show (and season 3 was pretty much a Charlie Foxtrot), but FK was a guilty pleasure of mine about 15 years ago. I only brought it up because of the appearance by John Kapelos in this Angel episode; it just seemed kind of funny that he appeared in two different TV series which both featured vampire detectives.

Gaius Frakking Baltar

Can y’all PLEASE react to Under the Red Hood ? Matter of fact react to the dc animated movies in general plz

flexluthor

The hotel in American Horror Story: Hotel (season 5) was based on that Hotel as well, if I'm not mistaken...

Ash Lee Can

LOL i was screaming at you guys the entire episode that the bellhop was Fake Dean/Fauxby!!!! lol glad you all got there at the end. this episode is one of the best angel episode. the hyperion > the magic shop in my opinion haha. I would say Judy was under the spell -- everybody was. but the demon just amped up everyone's paranoia that was already there, which is what makes the characters so compelling. i think it's also interesting to realize that Angel once attempted to help people in the same way he's helping them in present day. To have that one failed attempt prove to him that he didn't care about humanity is tragic yet understandable. it's just cool to realize that his life in Sunnydale and in LA is not the first time he tried altruism, but he was better equipped in sunnydale and LA with the right people around him this time.

Katey

Everyone in the hotel was under the influence of the demon. That's why everyone's behavior was escalating so dramatically, irrationally turning everyone against each other to the point of lynching. That's why the guest had the reaction they had after they lynched Angel. Just like the guy who unalived himself. The demon is taking their paranoia and amplifying it to irrationality. The demon WANTS them to fight and go crazy to further push their paranoia so it can feed and everyone gets left with nothing but the guilt of their actions (unless you end up deceased)...

Ash Lee Can

One thing that always gets me about this ep, is Judy isn't far off Angel is a serial killer, he is THE serial killer, Angelus is the template for so many of them, it hit so hard, love this ep

Macs

No one got the Star Wars balance training reference in Buffy?

Husk

impatiently waiting for episode 5. drac is ketty's fave so far, but once we get there, five is my fave of the intro eps. fave episode of the season is THAT episode in the teens. #toughwillow

rickie woodson

Baltar I think you and I might be the only people alive who knows about forever knight, and i'm here to tell you its time to let it go, it was kinda shit

Macs

Finally we are here, it took time but we are here, the hyperion

Macs

Yep, Judy was 100% affected by the demon at that point. It's the metaphor for the Red Scare (which they obviously mentioned). People started accusing everyone to save themselves during that time.

Jeff K

The ending of this Angel episode always got to me; the actress who played Old Judy gave a rather touching performance in the few minutes that she was on screen. Btw, the actor who played the hotel manager was a main cast member in a 1990's supernatural Canadian TV series called "Forever Knight". The series was about a brooding vampire who works as a detective in Toronto, solving cases and protecting the innocent as he tries to atone for centuries of evil acts - sounds familiar, right? Forever Knight lasted 3 seasons, and it was actually a pretty good show. Here's the opening credits, definitely some Angel vibes happening (even though the series aired long before Angel): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPhIEG3JYtg

Gaius Frakking Baltar

who says he was homeless.........or crazy............."in an insane world the sane are viewed as crazy" to quote en vogue, free your mind and the rest shall follow

rickie woodson

A really good episode of young justice Sportsmaster and Jade both want to kill Black Manta and Aqualad and a Introduction to Arsenal can't wait for that fight. Also Captain Cold did not know who they we're he just wanted to rob a bank being a villian. And I think that is the last time Cold is in Young Justice

BradBoimler

One of the best Angel episodes man, it's SO good.

Shockzz1234

I love Savage Spidey .. “Judy can go to sleep.”

Shirlene Wright

Daniel R is jugging the movie buy it's poor box office numbers because he has no brain of his own to decide if a movie is good or not

BradBoimler

Woooo buffy thursday! Last week was very exciting this week is fun, one of my fav episodes of young justice, seeing the real roy harper in action... and getting into dawns story for my fav season of all buffy season 5... i cant wait for the normies to watch Bring it on and go Hey is that? and Faith too...? Also as a side note Season 5 of Buffy is technically one of the possible Final seasons of Buffy... after 5 they switched channels and made two more seasons before contuning it through comics.

Ricardo Obregon

No wonder , the ressemblence was uncanny

Henry Wallace

Under the red hood deals with Jason Todd. The killing joke deals with Batgirl. I suggest reacting to both b4 season 3 so you have context

Chris D. Jones

So, the Hyperion is supposedly (but I don't think it's ever been confirmed) based on the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles, which was home to a pretty substantial number of suicides/deaths in the '40s and '50s. But y'all might know the Cecil best as the hotel from the Elisa Lam video in 2013.

Jeff K

it was actually the actor who played the fake dean in season 3 of community so Pat was kind of close

Joe Traupman

It's strongly implied that everyone's under the spell except the bellhop during the lynching - he's the only one who isn't horrified by what they just did. Even taking that out of the equation, though, the mob had found out about her. She's a biracial Black woman in the fifties and they think she's a murderer as well as a bank robber. She had every reason to think they'd go easier on the white guy than her - and she's certainly not going to speak up after that. After all, if they lynched the white guy, what would they do to her?

Holy Stregas

The bellboy was not Jim Rash. Slight resemblance but that's all . Plus Judy was definitely a victim

Henry Wallace

#sundayrundown correction mickey. jason todd doesnt die in the killing joke. he wasnt even in the book. the killing joke's story focuses on the origin of the joker and oracle. i will keep the details out since the show will cover it, eventually. jason todd's death's storyline is called "a death in the family" which they repurposed decades later with "death OF the family"

rickie woodson

The Angel reaction was wonderful! Rana v. Spidey debate about Judy's fate was unexpected and so good. I think Judy was affected by the demon. Everyone in the hotel was. What she did accusing Angel was wrong but nah she didn't deserve that fate of being Colonel Sanders tentacle demon's room service meal stuck in that room for 50 years. The Fake principle from Community IMDB search after was funny as hell too. A great episode. We made it to the Hotel!

j c

so in the comics none of this cloning shenanigans happened so roy went from speedy to arsenal not red arrow. since it was the clone that took the red arrow mantle, they kinda kept it comic accurate in that instance

rickie woodson

Yep. "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been" is one of the very best Angel episodes ever. So good.

Jeff K

why would captain cold recognize them? they arent in costume and he isnt watching the show to know their secret identities lol. he also wasnt paying them any mind. he was there for the money not to kidnap women or steal food so a girl luncheon was a non factor

rickie woodson

Death in the Family was the comic for JT’s death. Under the Red Hood showed his journey in becoming Red Hood after his resurrection, rather than being about him just dying.

Morgan Le Fay

she heard that it was good, which is true. i've heard nothing but good things from the reviewers/critics i follow

rickie woodson

We finally get a dawn centric episode. We haven’t seen her the last couple of episodes. Now we get to see more of her since she’s always been there, of course.

Daniela Madrid

About Rana's conviction that Judy was under a spell or if it was her choice, I think both things can be true. The demon amplifies the paranoia and fear that is already in the person. So she was very amped up. But at the end of the day the demon did not make her turn on Angel, she made a choice. I think that's why she asks for forgiveness at the end.

NJM

Being a good movie is successful.

CWall

So The Killing Joke is actually about how Batgirl gets crippled and becomes Oracle and under the Red Hood is about Jason Todd dying

CodePhoenix13

Marketa heard that 'Blue Beetle' was successful? From where? lol

Daniel R

This angel episode is such a good one. It really plays into the themes of the show . . Redemption, forgiveness and fighting inner and litteral demons. Also, it provides a glimpse into a much darker S2, especially with angel's "take them all" line. 😉

ray s

Such good Angel and Buffy episodes rn and i know the discussions are gonna be good... we spoiled

space colon

I assume because they haven't finished Rebels yet

Jack Jones

Sorry if you said it already in the past but I don’t know, but why haven’t you guys reacted to Ashoka?
