No, Michael isn't a satire of corporate bosses by this point in The Office because he was humanized by the writers. Proper satire requires the main antagonist to be consistent in it's absurdity; which Michael Scott isn't. His character's existence in season one solely existed to be a mirror for Corporate America who the audience isn't supposed care about as a person. Season five Michael Scott you actually care about as a viewer in some capacity. While the IASIP crew have changed in various ways, the reason why their characters exist haven't changed since season one. Even in the "nontopical and self contained" episodes the characters are consistent in their actions under the veil of satire as their decision making is based on their absurd warped perception of the world; which is a spyglass onto the wrongs of society to begin with. Very long story short, there's logical reasons why some might enjoy the crew from IASIP more than Dwight. People should like any character they want to and shouldn't have to justify why they like one character over another. There doesn't have to be any logical reason why Chris enjoys IASIP characters more than Dwight.

Im not sure what definition of satire and traditional comedy you’re using. The premise of the office has been the same…they just upped the over the top elements and made it more cartoonish. The core is the daily lives of people at an office. But that has nothing to do with whether it’s satire or not. IASIP also heavily flanderizes their characters. Compare Charlie and Dennis in season one to anything past season 5. Satire by definition: the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues. Michael isn’t a satire of peter principle bosses? And by that definition IASIP characters don’t consistently fit the definition of satire as well. Certain episodes are so nontopical and self contained. Doesn’t seem like satire has anything to do with what we’re talking about. It just seems like dissonance and contradiction when it comes to liking objectively worse asshole characters.

Veya

Calvin from The Blindwave is right.

I disagree with both shows keeping the assholeness consistent. IASIP for 16 years has always been in the realm of satire. "The Office" in its run went from satire in season one (which is its best season IMO) to basic sitcom stuff in a lot of it's seasons; in doing so humanized a lot of it's characters. The basic premise of IASIP has been consistent since season one where as the premise of "The Office" changed drastically from the beginning of the series to the end. "The Office" lost it's veneer of satire at some point in its run while IASIP still relies on satire comedy as it's driving force a decade since "The Office" ended as a series. That makes a significant difference in the narrative approach and how people view the characters within the two series. It's why Chris can enjoy awful characters in IASIP while not enjoying awful characters in "The Office".

love all the nods to the peanuts christmas special this ep of boondocks has. from the music to the "wonk wonk wonk" when grampy tuned out huey, it was soooooooo good! #homage

rickie woodson

BEEF?! Yesss! I have been waiting for this, but did not expect you guys to react to it!

Malky

agreed

the Chris count down works best no other way to do it that works, having said that, the audio is clearly going out of sync with whats on screen it's annoying, its nice that the audio matches whats happening but its obvious its out of sync with what the crew are reacting to on screen, not all the time but a lot of the time with uncuts.

Macs

I know. Just saying its changed and it bothers me lol

Both shows are consistent in keeping the asshole qualities of the characters. Idk why the office is being dismissed of this when they constantly have michael saying insensitive things and dwight having an authoritative streak even up to this season (last Toby episode? Dwight in the weight lost episode). That aspect literally didn't change regardless of season 5 or not. That was always the comedy the show went for for these two particular characters. And they've had softer qualities since season 2 (halloween episode with Michael and the kids, dwight comforting pam s3). So again, that dynamic has always been there, satire or not (which the office still is anyways). I mean the rationalization doesn't really seem necessary. They're just inconsistent with how they're viewing characters in "asshole comedies" which is part of The Office's dna, again, since the british series. It's just puzzling, that's all.

Veya

I used to be able to click on the links and they automatically went to a new tab. Now I click on it and it stays on the same tab and I always get confused why I don't have my tab still open with patreon showing.

Chris is a fan of IASIP and drops random IASIP references in various reactions. There's no redeeming qualities in for any of the characters and as Brakthir said, from the start they're despicable a-holes. The show is in season 16 and for the most part the writing for those characters have been consistent. Most of the actions around those character are self inflicted and it's a stage play into how each character can out-deprave the other. IASIP is mainly a satire as well. It's true The Office sets up Michael and Dwight to be a-holes, however they were written with some redeeming qualities and over time they've become more humanized by the writers in a setting where those around them are generally good people. Dwight has some sort of moral compass yet continually does things to people that don't deserve his torment. This may have been okay if The Office remained a satire but the series morphed into a traditional comedy by season 5.

Chaos T

When is cobra kai again?

Rey

The office sets up michael and dwight to be assholes from the beginning too lol. They aren’t jim and pam. I mean this is a comedy based off of a british sitcom and it’s softened in comparison but michael is regularly making insensitive comments and dwight was callous and jerkish since the first season. This isn’t like parks and rec or modern family. I think some people just won’t be compatible with this style.

Veya

and what type of beef is it

Garrett Gee

Do you cook the Beef with a Rock?

Garrett Gee

Well, yeah, but Always Sunny sets up all the characters early to be absolutely despicable assholes. You're not supposed to like them, you're supposed to laugh at the insane situations they get into.

Brakthir

Don’t think it’s bad. Just kind of mid. The dwight andy angela storyline is dragging at this point without too much comedy to show for it. I think that’s probably why chris and some of the others are feeling dwight’s jerkish qualities more. Then the jim pam stuff is wholesome but kind of a weightless drama. Michael’s idociy is the only thing that saved the surplus plot line and he hilariously bought a coat and got paint thrown on it before his plan backfired. Eh Idk to each our own but this stood out as a weaker episode especially when the other episodes either had more weight dramatically or were also funnier (like michael memeing tobey, or the holly stuff, just felt more substantial or funnier). It’s alright though. Far from the worst of the series lol.

Veya

You been living under a rock?

Dooly

This episode is a good one imo

MojoJojoGojo

What is beef? Ive never heard of it. I mean besides the meat i love to eat.

MASTER VOS

Imagine being the man that created Thriller, Off the Wall, and Bad for Michael Jackson and only being referred to as "Rashida Jones' Dad"

Kristof Wakoli

He is aware. His reactions are genuine 😂 cause Dwight does suck sometimes

MojoJojoGojo

What’s a complex character? Never heard of it.

Dooly

You have already said the problem. There is no possible way for them to all be quiet at the beginning. Blind Wave used to do all of their talking during the sync at the beginning. Calvin even said in a video that if you can not get the sync just by the count alone then you are an idiot. I think the normies figured out the best syncing method for their content.

Shawn Brink

Literally just have the people on the couch be quiet for like 2 whole seconds and then count down to hitting the play button. Nearly every other channel does this and it is a much better experience for the viewer.

Erik

omg Beef yesssss

MQ

Yeah it’s weird because he also named their dog or cat(?) after a character who has literally committed murder but these cheating people are too much.

Veya

Hi Erik. We use the frame that is most see able as a sync spot.. Some shows have a slow fade in starting at a black screen, it's nearly impossible to start all shows at 00:00. We would love to hear your suggestions! Feel free to DM us.

The Normies

Does Chris not realize that characters can be bad people and be likable/liked by audience at the same time?

Light Yagami

I love episodes like The Surplus or Safety Training, where it feels like the office (or Michael) fixates on one issue unrelated the the main storyline of the Office

Andy

once again, i am begging normies editors to please use a consistent sync frame for uncuts. basically all other channels have figured it out, it truly isnt that difficult ffs

Erik

One of the weaker Office episodes of the season imo. Even on a rewatch it’s pretty mid compared to the other ones surrounding it. The end of the season is fantastic though and there’s a great mini arc. As far as liking Dwight as a character. I mean people like characters that can be assholes, especially in comedies. As said before Dwight was always doing stuff like trying to get people fired and messing up people’s health insurance. This isn’t actually new, he and Michael always had a jerk side and it’s often mined for comedy and to balance them against Jim and Pam. Chris would not be able to watch It’s Always Sunny, the apex of this type of comedy lol. Dwight and Angela are complete saints by comparison. We don’t always want saintly characters and shonen protagonists. They have their place but these characters tend to be more dynamic and interesting.

Veya

Only 10 more weeks until the best part of The Office.

MPH

It would be great to see Marketa do her own reactions to the Office episodes she's missed!

Ian

Marketa always gone for the good office ones......

Mob K.O.

Lol, I am going to have to watch Beef now. Wanted to but kept putting it off. Excited for this reaction.
