To be honest, this episode of Angel is poorly written. It's predictable, it's rushed and at the same time it drags, the torture scenes are cheesy, and the dialogue is just bad. Plus, as you said, his explanation for destroying the ring was stupid. I mean, I know it was plot-based, but they could have done better. Just my opinion.
