I mean could u blame them? I remember being confused when I first saw Bleach too. Also the way Rukia breaks down what soul reapers do, she made it seem like soul society was paradise
She's a Messy Queen, such a Messy Queen! HEYHEYHEY

In case it hasn't been said a million and 1 times by now, let me say it again... Attack on Titan is good, and I'm gonna let you finish.... BUT NGE has one of the best anime OPs of all-time! Top 2, in my book, and it ain't 2 😭 lol (that's my troll for the week 😄)

Just please do yourself and us the favor and give up this idea that this is Heaven or a traditional western afterlife. You don't even need to know exactly what is true or not... just have a little imagination and you will see that if you weren't so focused on heaven and hell, there are plenty of theories you could come up with.

Souls are the residents of the Soul Society, hence the name, and they are the spiritual imprints of human beings. Some of them are the souls of the dead, but others were born in the Soul Society, such as most Soul Reapers. This is especially true of souls born in noble families, such as the Kuchiki, Shihoin, and Fon families.

It's a cycle of rebirth. There is a hell but Soul society is not necessarily heaven or at least not the version of heaven that makes it out to be a paradise.

They can't just be like "Let's go save Rukia." That's like saying if you're in the army and your fellow soldier is being put on trial for a crime and then just be like let's just fight the army because we want to save our partner who did in fact break the law. It's not a simple choice.

Ichigo vs Renji is so nostalgic, glad that Renji swallowed his pride and wanted Ichigo to rescue Rukia. I love Renji and Rukia's backstory. Sasuke's voice actor voiced young Renji. Also Suraj, another fun fact is that Vic Mignogna (Edward Elric) voices Ikkaku, the bald guy that Ichigo fought.

Moral of today's episode is talk shit get hit XD. Chris nailed alot about Renji but one thing I'll point out that I don't think they'll really harp on after this episode is that Renji never thought they would ACTUALLY execute Rukia. They express that when CPT Kuchiki reads the sentence and she got transfered to the Shrine of Penitence, you can see how shook and confused he is. And basically since that moment is when Ichigo's team invades Seireitei. In actual time line I don't think it's been more than 3 days from that realization to this moment so I think it's understandable he hasn't just gone rougue to save her on his own, because he has a much better idea of what he'd be up against than Ichigo.

I hope they watched it. It'll be fun to see them react to it. And technically, it's still manga content. It's based on a side-story that took place in between chapters 88 and 89.

The concept of the afterlife in Bleach is very similar to that in Buddhism (Samsara Cycle). There is no real heaven only a reincarnation cycle. Theare bits of info thrown here and there and when you piece it all together you realize:
1. Souls that don't have spirit energy don't age nor do they feel hunger (Remember the Parakeet boy spirit Chad saved and what his foster brother explained) However since this is based on Samsara then these souls will eventually get reincarnated back to earth.
2. Souls with spirit energy get hungry and as you've seen in the Flashback, they also grow and get old like Renji and Rukia. Based on the same religious concept, since these souls get to experience the same pleasures as the living, they also get removed from the cycle of reincarnation and when they die they should go to hell as payment for their long lives prolonged lives of pleasure (Rukia mentioned that she already lived at least a couple of lives longer than Ichigo).
Hope this answers your questions. There is something more below but contains minor spoilers.
Still about the afterlife concept but has a minor spoiler starting here:
Bleach has a twist on the 2nd concept. Soul reapers below lieutenant level spirit energy don't get sent to hell but they just disintegrate into spirit particles(will be mentioned in a flashback later on by someone Rukia dearly knows) Soul reapers above lieutenant get sent to hell like the original concept.

Renji isn't jealous at all. But he respects Ichigo's courage to rescue Rukia despite knowing it's essentially a suicide mission. Ichigo barely beat Renji. He still has 11 other assistant captains, and 13 captains that outclass them to worry about.

So the afterlife isn't really what one thinks of when it comes to an afterlife. It's more like a cycle where the people on Earth die and go to the Soul Society but then while you are in the Soul Society you life a little longer because you're a spirit but you will die of old age, or be beat to death, or get sick and then your soul returns to Earth. That's why the Quincy were genocided because they destroy souls so the total number of souls between the worlds. Also the one instance we really have of a person remembering Earth, parakeet boy, was anime only so it is possible that you don't remember anything when going between worlds.

“renji is jealous because ichigo is doing all the shit he should have done” chris is right. also the afterlife stuff is confusing but it helps to know it is based on shinto mythology. in shinto myth, the afterlife has continuity with the real world and is not a paradise or hell, just a realm where spirits live.

Like others have said, his sword is in his transformation state. Everyone's sword is the same, however ichigos was bigger, because he has SO MUCH ENERGY, like rukia said, however it is the same sword. Same basic ass look lol but this transformation makes it look like a cleaver and has that much more cutting power, plus we have seen 2 times now, when he goes all out and cuts, he causes a GIANT crevice in the earth. That. Ain't. Normal. It's his swords power.

Fairly simple when you realize that Tite Kubo based the world on Buddhism. There's life, death, rebirth, and a very fickle balance of all 3.

I don't know if you received the guide I sent you guys (I'm almost done with the completed version), but one thing I want to make sure you know about is to start watching the after-credits content ASAP. Right now, it's just Kon introducing names and ranks of all the Soul Society peeps, but soon it'll become something far more substantial. What I recommend is watching the ending, then averting your eyes through the preview (it's safe to listen to, as it's just fun character banter), then watching the after-credits. 👍🏼
Also, here's a handy-dandy diagram from a Quora user named Filipe Paixao, visually explaining the soul cycle in this universe: https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-12a29464b5ae6c3d9820dd37b7e6a9f9
Just remember, when a Quincy kills a hollow, they are taken OUT of this whole cycle completely; which is where it's said that Quincy/Shinigami conflict came from.

Yes this was also explained with Uryu and quincies and why quinces are bad for that balance since they destroy spirits. Also someone asked why some spirits don’t remember their life as humans that’s probably because they were hollows that came there from a soul reaper killing them.

why are you guys expecting to get the answer to the entire world in a flashback just showing Renji’s life? Why would Renji or Rukia know why people die or how the world works. But you were already given the answer to what happens to weaker souls when they die in soul society when Uryu was introduced. Soul reapers are considered balancers to keep balance they need there to be soul in soul society and the world of the living. So when souls die they get reincarnated into the world of the living. This isn’t heaven it wasn’t made to be that this isn’t based on Christianity on one specific religious belief. It’s more based on Buddhism where reincarnation and the cycle of life is a thing.
Weak souls don’t need to eat and most likely only care about eating because they are human. Strong souls with more spiritual energy need energy they will explain what happens when strong souls die here.

Yeah but people being born in the soul society is unneeded complexity at this point when they are still trying to grasp the concept of how this "heaven" works with death. It's not a big major thing for now.
Not saying it's not right to mention it but keeping it simpler for now might help lol.

The only ones who experience hunger are those who have a lot of spirit energy. Everyone else do not experience hunger. When you die in the Soul Society you are reborn in the world if the living. It's basically just a cycle.

Hundreds of years. She did get taller/older from what she looked like in the flashback she's just a short woman now and most anime dont age faces well for men or women they tend to look similar. (I've known girls irl who are still as short as they were in early high school / middle school half the hight of a avg guy nearly it happens)

This is not heaven it's the afterlife which is based in reincarnation. You die you go to spirit world where you die again but go to the human world again after that with new memories and mind as a baby basically. But you will die eventually in the spirit world due to age or harm.
Also yes no one hungers but they can still enjoy life like wanting to taste candy even if they don't need to eat. THE ONLY ONES WHO HUNGER are those who have enough spirit energy. Spirit energy you can think of basically like stamina and just like irl you can run out of energy without eating and resting so death via starvation will happen. Most spirits don't have enough energy to need this hunger. But soul reapers do and like you saw with Rukia and eventually Renji as kids they had enough innate spirit energy and gained enough to need to eat and become soul reapers also soul reapers live long because of this. Remember Rukia is hundreds of years old like Renji while their friends died without enough spirit energy to keep long life and were reincarnated back to earth.
Basically "heaven" is just another world you go where people have no bodily needs but still have senses to want enjoyment. Then you live their till you die and become a new person on earth or become strong enough to have high spirit energy and live many life times as a person becoming a soul reaper becoming a option.
