[Early Access + Uncut] Rocky 3 - Group Reaction

This movie was a proverbial cornucopia of pop-culture when it came out. It gave us “Eye of the Tiger” Mr. T, Hulk Hogan, Wrestlemania and the final chapter in the “Rocky” trilogy.

Philadelphia, has a real statue of Rocky Balboa, who's a fictional character. But not of Smoking Joe Frazier. Who by the way is a very real person, from Philly and beat Mohammed Ali. Smh 🙄

Okay M. And who may I ask determines objective truth about what makes a movie good? Experts? Film makers? There is absolutely nothing objective when it comes to art, in any form. There are agreed upon sets of ideas and principles that we as a society have agreed means "good." It's still something that a group of people have had to collectively DECIDE together. So, no, you are in fact wrong - there is nothing OBJECTIVE about art. Anyone with a basic understanding of English should be able to distinguish this.

Both are subjective. For example, a person can say "I think this is the best one because of these technical reasons, but I enjoy this one the most." Both parts of that sentence are subjective.

An objective truth doesn't have to have anything to do with what is best. Subjective also doesn't have to mean "my favorite." One is w/o any bias and the other isn't. Anything art related is going to have more subjectivity than objectivity. Otherwise there would be a clear cut greatest guitar player of all-time. Arguing "What is better" between musicians, video games, movies, etc. is fun. Eliminating that argument by saying that an opinion is just subjective takes all of the fun out of it. Subjective arguments are the most fun because there is no objective truth.

You can tell these movies were inspired by real boxing. Rocky's fight strategy in the rematch is similar to the legendary strategy used by Muhammad Ali when he upset George Foreman in the famous Rumble in the Jungle.

It's not a big deal, but I want to mention that Stallone did not direct the 1st Rocky; it was directed by John G. Avildsen, who won Best Director for that film.

That’s really interesting, I don’t think I ever knew that. I wonder if there’s any connection between that song and John G. Avildsen, who directed the first Rocky and first Karate Kid. Maybe just a coincidence since I don’t think he was involved by 3. But I agree, even though the song’s been overused and parodied so much at this point, all of that stems from its perfect first usage here and that’s why it’s become so iconic. The transition from the end of Rocky II into the fireworks with the riff starting, just fantastic.

Another fun fact about Eye of the Tiger: originally, the song You're the Best (from The Karate Kid) was intended to be used in Rocky 3 but was replaced by Eye of the Tigers. You are also correct on Another One Bites the Dust, too. So really, Eye of the Tiger was basically the third choice. I think most would agree it wound up being the correct one because it's hard to imagine this movie without it.

Rocky 4 is far from filler. Rocky 5? Sure. But Rocky 4, if we're viewing it as having its own in-universe mythology, is absolutely crucial to the entire franchise and especially to the Creed movies.

Not going to obliterate you in the comments as predicted, but those saying Eye of the Tiger premiered here were correct. Stallone had Survivor write it after Queen wouldn’t let him use “Another One Bites the Dust” if I remember right.
