✨✏️ December behind: speedpaints, fun brainstorming exercise, + sketches

same as last month, because I did the sticker sketch traditionally in pencil, I didn't record that part of the process. the sticker speedpaint only features the coloring process (which was unexpectedly challenging this time around, never a dull moment as they say).

brainstorming + sketches

something I've started doing to jumpstart the brainstorm process is play a word association game. I think of the month I'm about to create for and what comes up for me. from there, I can branch out into specific things like recent interests/inspirations and color palettes. I like having an overarching theme to work with, because it helps me draw everything back to those handful of ideas and with overall cohesion of concept.

rough thumbnail and idea of painting. I always try to keep it really simple at this stage, focusing on overall composition and where to direct the eye. I say try, because I have a tendency to get lost in detail and have to wrangle my inclinations like they were a wild beast.

sketching ideas for various celestial patterns on the quilt.

reference board

it's fun looking back on ref boards, because I get to see how my thought process evolved as I worked on a piece. I may have started out with a certain handful of ideas or vision, but as I work I get new ideas or think about going in a different direction and it's cool seeing a visual map of something as intangible as thoughts.

something else I've been doing recently is taking screenshots of a piece as I'm working on it so I can see how it's evolving and reference previous versions if I think they look better and make changes accordingly. it's a fun litmus test, sometimes I can see that I'm going in a good direction and other times I'll realize a previous version was better and I need to take a moment to simplify my ideas and clear out the noise.

hope this peek into my process was useful! :]<3

loooove this idea of moving through different portals with each artwork. my favorite art always possesses that ability, to transport me temporarily to a different world and existence....

I think it stems from my interest in activities like journaling, tarot, and reading. I love! looking! for patterns and themes! and thanks so much, I'm glad you like this piece! :D

mitski gets it, she really gets it

ahaha yeah December really is heavily marketed as "the Christmas month". I've found a lot of descriptions and imagery of December/winter in poetry, books, music that have helped me think about the season in different ways, which has been a lot of fun to learn about. the environmental landscape also tends to look different during the colder months as does our relationship to time, so there's a lot of interesting things going on!

also these speedpaints and process images are really making me see each photocard and sticker as their own worlds!! like maybe we're moving through different portals and each one has its own aesthetic, motifs, and colors...

i do the same! i have a closet-mirror in my room and if i need to draw a certain pose or hand movement i just look at myself while i draw kekekeke

I love the idea of using an overarching theme! I definitely feel the feelings of pausing and resting from your artwork 🥰 looking forward to receiving the postcard !

I adore your work and seeing your process. Im so used to christmas art for december so reading your description of december devoid of the holiday and its imagery was eye opening, made me realise ive never viewed the month outside of it being the christmas month. I think this might be my favourite postcard+sticker yet!

Vicki Tsai

Hi Vicki! Can I ask what website/app you use to put together your reference board? Thank you :)

Rin

it's so useful! you can't always find the ref you need so using yourself is a good solution :]

Vicki Tsai

love that you used your own self as a pose reference!!
