Australian's abroad in the 1850 and 1900s would do/be asked to do this at parties, where they were sort of paraded and mocked for their sort of second class status as occupants of one of the 'dominions'. Tasteless Provencal hillbillies pretty much was how the british looked upon the little colony. More situationally sensitive Australians would find it humiliating and generally made attempts to hide any signs of their Australianess during travel.
