I'm lazy so I'll just be a POS and directly lift this from wikipedia "Throughout the 14th and 15th centuries, most European frames were church-commissioned and largely unmovable as they were altarpieces and a large part of the church's architecture. The frames were ornamented with architectural elements mimicking the exteriors of the great cathedrals."
With that context I'm fond of this page/panel using but breaking the frame. While our heroes ultimately are the product of their times restrictive structural Christianity, their movement into the wilderness marks a philosophical shift to a more existential Christianity. Parts of the frame remain, but ultimately it becomes altered as their world expands.
The paneling throughout the work I've tried to use as metaphor for that shift from the structural to the individual. And this should become more evident as the chapter progresses.
