As time in the probation stations moved forward and British inquiry into rampant sodomy increased, convict lodgings became increasingly patrolled and opened (for example lack of doors, and viewing windows for guards). Funny enough, this did nothing to curb engagement in scandalous activity, as convicts were noted to continue being pretty flagrant in their interactions. One British Officer wrote back to Britain an infuriated 62 page letter, deeply upset at the local authorities for "screening the crime of sodomy and other delinquencies among probation men' . The reason for screening these crimes? there's a few schools of thought and perhaps to some degree they are all true. I think the two main one's were - The activity reflected poorly on the station and embarrassed the free settlers who feared they would all be considered as 'unnatural monsters' due to proximity, and/or ultimately the authorities didn't really consider it to be that big of a deal, if the men were working hard, why not allow them some recreation?
One thing is for certain, this stigma was weaponized, whether cynically or earnestly to end convict transportation to Van Dieman's land. Where all other arguments fell on deaf British ears, the fear of moral decay represented by dick touching was far too much.
