Men came from all over in droves to find their fortune. Government at the time didn't like the riff-raff profiting and as such introduced licenses to stake your claim on the gold fields, which of course meant wealth would only continue to concentrate in already wealthy hands. This led to the Eureka stockade riots and the poor folk fought back against the tyranny, this led to non-land owning males obtaining the right to vote. In short, the birth of Australian democracy.
Little gay history side-note, much like the prisons, gold fields concentrated huge groups of men and few females, as such gay sex was pretty prevalent. Ironically there was an idea at the time that it was good for a young man's development to be sent away from women to avoid feminine influences. Naturally dick touching ensued. I've heard that some of the cruising spots, or beats in Australia trace all the way back to this time.
